Lol. Yeah, it does sort of look like a mini camera in a way.

That black looking piece is a illumination spot light for your heater levers between the front seats. They weren't very bright at all, but was supposedly to give off enough light to help you find the levers at night.

(It's the one marked No. 17 in Owners Manual)

That other fixture with the larger bulb next to it is something a previous owner added on. Not a factory item.

thank you
i dont even wanna mention what i thought that "camera" was for.

yeah actually i added that on as a sort of dome light, except when it was on the headliner it glared too much so i put it under the dash, puts out perfect amount of light to read a map by.

alright now i can sleep soundly thanks again

I Believe it might be an adjustable map light from a newer VW Wink

Installed straight from the government. There weren't cell phones for them to tap back in the 70's, so they installed the camera's.

The microphone is under the center cap of the steering wheel. People started finding those cause it caused connectivity problems with the horns.

It is a spotlight to illuminate the heater controls so you can find them in the dark. Look for a red/gray wire; it's on the same circuit as the instrument illumination.
Check the wiring diagram for your car, it's there.

x2 That is the purpose of the light. It's actually in the users manual.

Really? I'd have a hard time prying anything with my ball peen.
