Have you packed it with grease instead of gear oil?

I got a rebuilt one from BFY. Price seemed reasonable. Haven't installed it yet so I can't tell you how they did.

I have a couple old 50's steering boxes that I've rebuilt my self. I glass bead blasted them and cleaned all the internals out and re0packed with grease. They both look amazing now and work as good as before.

Pure grease will end up 'falling away' from the used surfaces and piling up directly next to it. You need to mix in a bit of STP oil treatment to get it to stay liquid enough. It will not leak from the bottom seal. See Wolfgang Parts for description. That is how they do thier steering boxes.

Where can you get new seals for these boxes? I'm sure they are pretty generic. Any one know of the dimensions off hand?

Does 40x28x7mm sound right for the pit arm shaft? 24x16x7mm for the input shaft?

Another seal question...

I picked up an old steering box for a rebuild core. I noticed that there was nothing covering this worm shaft bearing. Seems like oil would just take a trip through the bearing and leak out. Is there supposed to be a press in cap or something to cover the hole in the box?

Yeah there's normally a plug in there, looks very like a core plug that the wasser cooled guys use to hold their coolant in

Is it somewhat common for these plugs to fall out over time, or must removal be intentional?

(pm sent)

Thanks for the pictures.

When you install the plug, do you just press it in, or do you need to apply some sort of sealer to the contact surfaces?

Here is another question: Is the rubber gasket between the cover and box reusable?

It's not rubber, it is a paper gasket. If you are careful removing it you can reuse it. If is gets damaged it's easily replicated with some gasket material.
