I dont wanna mess up my fenders, First off its a 72 standard bug with drop spindlles.I am running 195/50/15's up front on empi 8 spokes. What I'd like to know is, will I have any issues with rubbing at all? As far as appearances it look ok but I just want to make sure. Also I'm planning on going 225/50/15 in the rear, because thats the biggest size in a 15 that i can get to match the front tire.I'm running Hankook H405's.The rear is at the stock height, and the tires im wanting for the rear are 23.9 inches tall.
Thanks in advance, also my bug will be running the next couple days, _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle

Do you want the Pike's Peek look or are you hoping these will fit? The rears are way too wide for a 5.5" wheel and will only shorten the tires tread life and should rub somewhere during your drive. The fronts will stick out approximately 3/4" + and most likely rub often. That's my speculation based on your description without pictures.
The common 15x5.5" 8 spokes with dropped spindles "could" work with the baby 145's, but braking and handling will suffer. Now you mentioned 195/50/15" which is around 8" wide on its own. The 225/50's are going to be 9.4" wide and the overall diameter is way to short for normal use, unless you have a 3.88 R&P with .82 final drive, even then that's pushing it.
What exactly are you going for with this build?
REMEMBER I AM ASSUMING EVERYTHING AS YOU HAVE NOT PROVIDED PICTURES. WHAT SOME THINK LOOKS OKAY, OTHERS THINK WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY. WE NEED A SHOT FROM THE REAR, FACING FRONT DOWN THE SIDE. NOT OF YOU!!!!
If you must run 195/50's up front, I would consider a 2" narrowed CB beam to get it closer to inside the fender. Be careful with the drop though, those are wide tires. A prefered 175/65/15" would be an excellent choice, as well as a second choice, 185/60 or 65. I would also definitely reduce the rear tire to a 195/65/15". It will better mimic a factory 155/80(?) and keep the drivetrain happy and fuel consumption at bay.
If you are after a FAT look with tires then you need to commit and get FAT fenders or start narrowing bits to fit those meats.
Good luck! |

I'll take a picture for you to see today, since we'll be working on it.The 195/50's are on it and do stick out a 1/4" but it dont bother me, I was just wondering about clearance issues. As of right now the way it sits, we havent put the gas tank in it so even with the 2.5" drop, after installing the motor and the frontend raised up a touch. So hopefully with the added weight of a full gas tank, and the hood back on it along with the interior it will go back to where it was. Then if it does I weigh 205lbs maybe it will rub, i gues only time will tell about that. The rear tires I'm trying to decide between the 225/50/15 and a 205/60. I like the meatie look of a fat tire, I'm guessing they'll balloon out pass the fenders maybe a 1/4-1/2 inch but that wont bother me. The 205/60's are .5" taller than the 195/60's that are on it now and I'm thinking that would be a waste just to get a tire thats same as the 195/60.The overal look I'm wanting is the look of a drag bug.I have a fiberglass resessed scooped hood and the stance just deciding on tires. Any idea how bad the gearing will change with a 23.9" tall tire? _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle

Depends on the trans. If yours is original it could/should be a 4.12 R&P and that would be a bit of a screamer past 50mph on extended runs. Turn the cooling fan too fast and it won't be able to cool proper. It actually drops cfms beyond 3500rpm sustained. It could be worse though. Cool thing is, it's just tires, the easiest part of a vehicle to change for benifit.
No matter what the look you want to achieve, I will only try to help you get there....happily. |

As far as I know the tranny and motor are stock but I wont find out till maybe Friday or late tomorrow. I wont be doing any 60mph+ runs so it might not do any bad screaming down roads haha! only the single glasspack will do that. _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle
