What's up!!! It's been awhile but been busy as hell. Anyway I got a new problem and not sure where to start. I'm thinking ignition. Anyway when I start my car kinda feels like it's running on 2 cylinders until it warms up then fine. That's no big deal. Car runs like a bat outta hell but after driving for awhile, like when it gets hit engine won't pull past 5k and backfires. I have a Petronix on an 010. Any ideas? Lean maybe? _________________ 57 Ragtop

How hot is HOT? Do you have cylinder head and oil temp gauges? |

Increased friction due to smaller clearances from heat growth of parts? Hot valve (s) sluggish in closing or sticking? _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

Did it ever run okay? is it the motor in your sig line?
If it still runs, just not over 5k when hot and use to always run good i would start checking my fuel system out. Maybe its starving for fuel???
You can also pull over and see how hot your dip stick gets. Just to get an idea if you are overheating or not.
Kadrons can idle on two cylinders if you don't increase the manifold plenum, just learned that fix from Bruce's comment on another thread. Dual dual carbs... make sure idle jets aren't clogged. If its been sitting a while I would be tempted to take off the carb, or carbs and clean them. |

With having BOTH warm up and hot issues I would first try swapping the distributor. What is your fuel pressure? _________________ Street legal fiberglass rocket ship

Don't forget the possibility of multiple independent problems. one causing the low rpm problem, something completely different causing the other. Start with the usual valve clearance and timing. check timing cold, when it's running good, and hot enough to not be running right. _________________ -Russell

Wierd stuff happens when u dont drive it often. Check main stack for obstructions and test your coil. If its a blue bosch 3 ohm check. Lastly, check rotor seat. Sometimes they wear inside and dont seat. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

Tighten down the Pertronix and you'll be back over 5K. _________________ "So didja?" -Bob Hoover |

Sorry guys, I appreciate ur input. I didn't ignore u guys just had some stuff happen.
rrcade. Yes temp never gets above 230.
Dr.... Set valves .002 when warm
Timmy. Motor runs awesome and fuel pressure at 3.5. Only recently its been acting up
Don't think its jets cause it runs fine till warmed up. I can nail it and it fly's. But cruise for about 30 min and it falls flat at 5k
Kame. Checked valves And timing. All good
Jfats. Good idea. Emma check the rotor. Its a petronix flamethrower coil
Smkn. I hope ur right lol
Thanks guys _________________ 57 Ragtop

Good suggestion...the hot coil syndrome running out of steam. If running rich at top end and using a Blue coil possibly not getting hot enough spark to burn fouling and jump gap and resulting in lots of misfire ie. no juice to get over 5K rpm's.
Slap in a 50KV coil if you're running something smaller and some well shielded plug wires and call it good. _________________ "So didja?" -Bob Hoover |

I had a very similar issue at 6250rpm. Coughing and backfiring. I run injection and MS2 ignition. It felt like the rev limiter was cutting in.
Tried ignition, fuel pressure, the lot.
Turned out to be valve float. Fixed the valve springs = revs!! _________________ "The Lord does not subtract from the life of a man, the hours spent on his Volkswagen" Anon. |
