well i have made alittle bit of progress. throttle cable came in so i put it together. i ordered the empi heavy duty 16 foot cable. (it was plenty long) it worked out really well running inside the brake cable! i drilled a hole in the throttle arm to move it up for more leverage. now i dont have to move the pedal 6 in. to get wide open throttle. im going to weld a stop on the assembly so that im not tugging on the cable and the carb when its floored. i have the front half wired and running in conduit. im just waiting on my junction box to show up. i also made a plate for the master kill switch. im just waiting on a welder so i can weld up some tabs and install it.
speaking of the welder i gave up on the snap on man. he still hasent came up with one for me so i cancled it. i ordered a HOBART 140 amp MIG with gas hook up. it has better specs than the snap on and its $700 less than the snap on i think its a much wiser move than the snap on one anyway! i should be here UPS tomorrow! this weekend i will get alot of work done and post some pics.
oh i also got a title for the old girl. i know its illegal but its now tagged as a 77 VW golf. its never been close to legal, but its closer now _________________ My build thread:

I thought the first generation Golf in the US was called the Rabbit until the early 80's? _________________ '64 Shortened Chassis and Stuffed

i got my junction box in the mail today. i wired what i could before i bolted it to the roof of the buggy. now when you sit in it the switches are all above your head. i planned on soldering all connections but decided not to after using my new snap on wire pliers they provide a very nice crimp. you can pull on them with pliers and they wont come off. i then shrink wraped aver the crimp. its now bolted on the roof. i used some weather stripping to put inbetween the box and the roof to keep vibration noise from bothering me.
welder didnt show up today maybe monday. _________________ My build thread:

found an old crome tip and put it on my exhaust. not big on crome tips but it adds alittle bling.
got her all wired this weekend! i have about 10 hours in it. maybe more. i am very pleased with how it turned out though! the only thing i have left is welding tabs on for my master kill switch and hooking it up. i dont have a new starter yet either so it will still be ahile before its running again.
here is how my gauges are now! i like them close in eyesite for when im runnin 80 or 90! i like the carbon fiber look to.
i still need to get some turn signals and get them wired. i have the relay and the switch in the fuse box, i just need to run the wires and mount some turn signals. i think im going to get some plexiglass and make a 8 or 10 in wind shield to help deflect wind over your heads. i also plan on making some side panels out of aluminum to deflect the sand when you turn. _________________ My build thread:

I like the junction box! I like it even more that you put it up high above your head. I want to set up my radio, and a push start button up high in my baja. The radio is kind of a hard decision though b/c it would sit so far back. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

i have been thinking of a radio as well. i think what i will do for that is make a speaker box with a radio in it to. that way you just have a power wire you hook to it. then you could take it out really quick and easy for rain or washing it. i would mount it up front in front of your feet and run it with a remote as for the junction box, i wish it was 4 inches shorter so the switches wouldnt be so far back. but its not to bad. _________________ My build thread:

man, dixon.... that thing looks better and better everytime i see it! are you not running front brakes? kinda looks like you have spindle mount wheels up front. im not gonna run front brakes at first. want to see how it handles stopping without them first. if it feels iffy, then ill add the guts into the hollow front drums _________________ I NEVER KNEW I KNOW SO LITTLE, TILL NOW.... |

its 13.5X14X3 they call it a fire junction box. has a hindged door with a keyed lock. came off ebay for $35 delivered.
and yes those are spindle mount wheels. i plan to upgrade to disc brakes up front when i can afford it. i have disc on the back now so it does stop pretty decent. i dont think drums would stop it to good with just rear because of the heavy ass motor i have back there. _________________ My build thread:

I don't know how much you'll get out of that windsheild you're thinking about. I have one for legality purposes, and it kinda just chops up the air more than deflecting it.
Have you ever ridden a motorcycle behind an SUV?
Instead of a constant 'whoosh' you get 'thup-thup-thup'.
Don't get me wrong, its somewhat less air, but I def wouldn't call it a deflection. Mine is about 12 I think, it come up to about my chin.
I bought a piece of Lexan for 60-70 at Home Depot that was big enough to make one windsheild and replace it twice if need be (scratches, swirls).
The plexiglass breaks and shatters into shards that supposedly will kill you. Lexan is 2 or 3 hundred times strongers, and is more likely to bend or rip. So before you decide on plexi def buy one of the 3 dollar pieces, take it into the parking lot and bend it. Witness the brittle snapping action, point them at your chest, then picture a deer or branch pushing on the other side, LOL
Granted your posts arent as useful now that you converted to a waterpumper, but I still want you around. That rail is pretty cool. Im not a big safety person, but using plexiglass was over the line for me. Anyway, be careful if you do use it. It's a lot cheaper than lexan, but pretty risky in a car that bounces through some weird places. |

Cuts with an acrylic cutter or utility knife. Just score and break over a table edge. You just have to score lexan deeper.
It doesn't cause a whooshing noise per say. I'm not sure how to describe it really. Maybe the way your car shudders while passing a semi? The windsheild 'breaks' or 'cuts' the air and makes it kinda vibrate instead of being constant. I drive mine on the freeway and stuff though, so if you're not rolling at 55 - 65 a lot you probably won't notice. |

Ive cut lexan with a bansaw with mild fine teeth and it came out just fine.
As donaldson pointed out, its much safer. thats why race cars use it. its light weight, and it wont kill you in an accident.
when you clean it, DO NOT use regular cleaner. it will scratch it. there is a specific cleaner for it, but i can not remember what it is. (thats what my old boss told me, not sure if hes right, or paranoid) _________________ "In case I don't see you, good afternoon , good evening, and goodnight."

| I just let mine sit in the rain for cleaning. But I've heard the same thing with scratches. Kinda a non-issue for Cass or me though. Mine is just to be legal, his is a wind deflector, neither one is high enough to cover eye level. |

ya i have heard not to wipe them clean as well. do you think i will have to have a bar in the middle to suppore it? or should it have a frame all the way around it? i also thought about tinting it or somthing like that. only problem with that is it will attract the fuzz
so my welder came in today!! this is my first time in action on the new one. i have never been able to weld this good. i think im going to love this little welder! this weekend i will put it into action on the buggy!

Naw, I'd say your windshield is not wide enough to have to worry about it. it will flex some from the wind, but being short and narrow will help keep it taught.
if you want it removable, get some good dzus fasteners. It wont go anywhere.
I forgot that you guys are in mid western. I would need a full piece as i dont do sand dunes. its nice to keep stuff out of my face. _________________ "In case I don't see you, good afternoon , good evening, and goodnight."

Mine has a worrisome amout of flex above 55, but I still haven't gotten around to putting proper mounts in for it, so it's still zip tied in.
If you have actual mounts you might be good. I'm thinking about dropping my roofline in the front and putting in a center support just to look sweet. |

Took a quick pic. Mine is 12 high, and I'm thinking 48 wide.
