I believe hugheseum is correct. My pre rear bumper March 1953 has a muffler like the one pictured on your diagram. No muffler tip. Otherwise they are the same.

I thought it was weird too, but if you put any length of tip on the muffler, it is just too long.

I agree. A muffler tip on a pre rear bumper is not correct, and it looks weird too.

I believe the mufflers without the tab next to the outlet are correct for the earliest busses. Everything else looks the same just no tab.

I agree.

I looked at my NOS mufflers, like the ones Uzi posted, and they all have the tab so it may be that was the standard VW dealer replacement part.

I also have an NOS Ernst muffler with no VW stamps on the side, it has no tab and the outlet tube is more crude looking and thick.

I'm guessing the ones Gibbs posted have the tabs with the "B" @the end of the part number

Yes, the ones I have with a tab and a part # have a "B" part #.
None of the have a sticker like the above though, they are all have writing in pen.

My single Ernst muffler without a tab is marked A/B.

Wolfsburg West sells repros:
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211251051B

I see you are in the UK though - I'm pretty sure most VW places can order them.

There are a few new and used one in the classifieds on this site right now too - search on: 36 muffler

I don't believe the tips are reproduced but I see them for sale quite often on this site and eBay.

Here's one in the classifieds right now:
