I replaced the throw out with the clutch and pressure plate. Noise is less not gone. I drove around the hood all day on Friday. Weather was great. 75 and sunny. By afternoon the noise lessend a bit but not gone. Or I just got use to it. I am beginning to think it is the shaft bearing in the trani. I plan to drive it til the noise is gone. One way or another.
U will be on the look out for any Things at Ocotillo.

Hopefully the noise goes away nicely (although not usually the case). Here is a picture of my Thing. I'm not sure what day we will be heading down to OW.

Thats very nice. I like the wrap around rear bumper. Smart. Does yours have a top. I see the rack on top and it is a great idea for spare. I would like to have a top for sun and dirt.

I thought I would update things. Sadly my trip to Ocitillo Wells bombed out. Friends had too many pressing issues ($$$) so it was canceled and I did not want to go by my myself out of fear somthing would break like the trani and I would be stuck. I did find out the source of the noise in the trani. It is the output shaft bearing. Plans: Drive it til it dies then replace. That is the great thing about VW. I think that sitting so long with no use dried it out. Or it was always there and it was so loud with just a stinger I never heard it.
I did take it to the local mountains with my son and shook the bugs out. There were plenty. By the end of the drive the steering wheel was loose enough that if I had pulled hard it would have been in my chest. We had a blast and the suspension worked great sucking up large bumps at around 35-40mph.
I decided to change the paint scheme. I think a little green goes a long way. After scouring through the web I noticed many jeeps that have black fenders and the body is painted another. So my fenders are going to be black. I would love to see a two tone paint job on some. Also got the interior painted correctly. Saldy the PO painted the rubber pieces that go around the door opening. Acetone or painter thinner does not work to remove. Any one with ideas? They are in great shape and I have better things to spend 25 bucks on.
Anyway here are some latest pictures.

I used paint thinner to get the over spray off my rubber trim, before I dyed it... But that was just over spray.. A good scraping with a razor and then lacquer thinner should work too, but for $25, i'd just replace 'em.... Or simply paint over whats there to the color you want(until you get the $25 to toss at new ones)....

The Thing is looking awesome! I think the Super green with black fenders/bumpers will look great. can't wait to see it in color!!

Car is looking great! I also picked up a pair of fenders from BCF. Are you going without front blinkers? I have been searching for some trick looking LED blinkers, but can't find any I like. I might try to integrate into tube bumper.

Looks great and I love the dash!

Try using a 3M Scotch Brite pad with acetone or other thinner. Seems to work good for me.

Green and black all the way.

I have gotten alot of good ideas from your build and others on The Samba.

Not running any blinkers till I get busted then I will makeshift ones to get signed off. I personally do not see a need for fronts. I use hand signal if needed. The rear is more important in my mind.

I finally figured out the source of the noise from what appeared to be the trani (output shaft bearing). I took the car out and had 2 of my sons friends in the back seat. combined they weighed over 200 lbs. The noise went away. I figured that the weight of the boys brought the car suspension down and did something to the CV's/Axle angle. I reindexed the car 1 tooth. Sadly I could not take 1" out of the car no matter what combo I did and ended up at 2" lower. However the noise is gone. What I cannot figure out is Empi 930 CV's at 22.5 degrees should be less than the max limit of 25 degrees so there should be no noise. Anyway I think the lesser preload will work better because I am running quad shocks in the rear.

Hey Saddlesore I just saw This info today and it may be the solution to the problem. I have been having a clicking noise from my 930 cvs as well but only when turning right.

Check out this link http://www.outfrontmotorsports.com/hot_tips.htm#CV%20Assembly%20101

After reading this I will take mine apart and check alignment. My angle is also less than 25 degrees.

Let us know if you find anything.

Charlie

I did the alignment procedure for the CV axles as outlined in the link of the above post.
It solved the clicking I was having while turning right in my Thing.

Very good reading and pertinent info for lifted IRS VW's.

I have not re adjusted yet. I went out to Ocotillo Wells last weekend and the Thing drove great. I was in between 2nd and 3rd through all the woops all day and 4th down dirt road. Had to smash the breaks a couple of time for the big ones. the front end was like riding on a cloud. I would like to increase the rear 1" and stiffen slightly for when the kiddies are in the back. When I have the time patients and energy I will use your method and move it down/up what ever it is. I have a video from iphone but my kid turned the shone and it is sideways. I would post but it is annoying. If anyone knowns how to fix and post i will do so.

Had a couple of folks ask about interior color so I took some over head shots.
I am running a satin Black with Bed Armor on the pan. I love it. Never lost anything in the darkness and it holds up well. My only complaints are it use to hold water like a bath tub until I drilled drain holes and when it gets muddy or dusty(offroading) it take a deck brush and soap to get out of the nooks and cranies.
On another note. The rear fenders (2" wider and 2" Taller) are in the mold shop. They are better than anything else you have ever seen.
1. they bolt in stock locations. No need to drill into the side of the body to mount.
2. They are ready to paint. Not like others where the original mold has voids in it and leave blemished in the glass. I will update when I get them.
