More significant Time Machines 2011 flyers distribution as of yesterday, when my good friend Bill Silvestri helped me hand 'em out to all the cars at the Central CT Region AACA event in Glastonbury. That's Bill himself to the left in the photo below, posing with two other nice fellows from the Central CT Region, plus Bill's '62 Convertible to the left and my '60 Sunroof Bug (nicknamed "Doug") to the right. Thanks again for your help, Bill!!!
It turns out a certain well-publicized (I think it might be the same car that bsvwoc mentions here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=229090&highlight=hemmings - and it appears RareAir posted a picture of the engine from this car here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=452426) and super-eye-catching '56 Ghia was also at the Central CT Region event, when the man behind F40 Motorsports drove in with this one--and that's Bill S. posing with it again:
Later the same morning, I also made it down to East Haven to hand out flyers to all the cars at the Knights of Columbus car show on Route 80 in the Foxon section. Great day to be out and about in an old VW! _________________ Stock Steve

Just found these in a box: '88 and '89 special plaques (aluminum, from Daytona Trophy, 2"x3") that we gave out to VW participants, plus an actual original '88 Time Machines plaque (heavy brass, about 3"x4"--no idea who made them) from the overall event.
At this time, I was running the CT VW Association, and so made the VW class sponsorship at Time Machines in CVA's name.
Note that we incorporated the original Time Machines "corporate logo" into the '88 VW plaque. Though the Shoreline Antique Auto Club (Region AACA - now long-since defunct) had been running antique car shows for several years prior to 1988, that year was the first year that the term "Time Machines" for their big show came into being. That first year, it was also a *3-day* event--yow--I was there, and as I recall, there were a lot of club members who were not super-psyched about devoting an entire weekend to helping out at a car show (I even blew a vacation day so I could help out on Friday). "Sanity" returned in '89, though, and it became a *1-day* event once again...
It's interesting to note also that the '88 VW plaque only listed July 17th, so it appears the "main" car show day for the '88 event was that day only.

|
|
And amazingly enough, I still have a copy of the show booklet from that inaugural "Time Machines" event in July 1988. Below are scans of the front and back cover, plus the page on which I placed a CVA display ad.
The TM '88 booklet was quite well done, with a lot of information about the club and the show, historical features about many CT-built automobiles, tons of ads, old pictures, and much more. Though, like the "three day" concept, I don't think anything like it was ever attempted again by the Shoreline Antique Auto Club. I think the club had actually hired a professional PR firm to "pump up" the image of the show (I was only a peon member of SAAC at that time, and so knew little about the inner workings of stuff like that). It's kind of amazing that the club survived, after all these over-reaching projects surrounding the 1988 extravaganza (which we can now see with our 20-20 hindsight).
Sorry about the scribbles, by the way--I only have this one copy, and apparently I was using it to take notes at some point--possibly even on show day in '88.
One final point of interest about Time Machines '88 is that it was actually set up within the Durham Fairgrounds itself--with groups of cars arranged in areas like the tractor pulling ring, and other bits of space here and there--the flea market too. I believe it was not until the following year that the show moved across the street to the expansive Coginchaug Regional High School athletic fields (where all those old photos that I've been presenting in previous posts to this thread were taken), which worked much better.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the additional historical background on Time Machines that we've been digging up.
Oh, and if you tried writing to CVA at that Stratford post office box that's shown in the display ad from the '88 booklet, your mail would be returned--that address is long since retired.
These days, you need to visit the good folks at CVA online at: http://www.ctvwa.org/ - and get psyched for this coming weekend's "7th Annual New England Volks-Meet" in Lebanon, CT at the Lebanon Fairgrounds - here is the samba thread:

Thanks Connecticut Volkswagen Association for TM2011 publicity help at Lebanon '11!
First shot is borrowed from the CVA web site (thanks CVA webmaster & photographer Heather!) showing the Time Machines flyer posted on a display board at the Lebanon show (CVA Volks-Meet, 7/10/2011), along with other flyers:
Second and third shots are goodie bag materials from the car show--including the TM2011 flyer (thanks CVA for stuffing 'em!), plus listing on a sponsor sheet. Thanks again CVA folks!
Be sure to check out the official samba thread about "CVA-Lebanon 2011," featuring lots of pictures, at: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=469679 _________________ Stock Steve

|
|
I was out and about in my Bug today, Saturday, 7/16/2011, and snapped this picture of a large advertising banner for the Time Machines 2011 antique auto show. The banner spans Rout 1 (Boston Post Road) just about right in front of Ashley's Ice Cream--and just a couple hundred feet or so west of "The Place," which is on the other side of the road:
"The Place," by the way, is a cool seasonal outdoor restaurant - see outrun1984's thread for more info: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=461925
EDIT: I cropped down the above shot to show..."The Place" sign visible in the distance (see below), cool!
And finally, here's a view of the Time Machines 2011 banner itself only:
We're getting close--just about a week or so away now. Nice to see the commitment by the event organizers to getting the word out to local residents about the event... _________________ Stock Steve

Well it looks like the Guilford curse has ended... Weather looks great with no rain. I have already started packing as we will be in the swap meet and yes the High Roof is coming, must be why it is not going to rain. |

Sounds good Clay! Suggest bringing some water to keep yourselves hydrated, since this looks to be a hot week--perhaps with some moderation by the weekend, though (based on what weather.com is showing this morning for the 06437 zip code in their 10-day forecast).
And Gil Simmons on Channel 8 is saying this morning: "...SUNDAY: Sunny & less humid. Highs 85-92..."
We'll keep our fingers crossed... _________________ Stock Steve

Oh come on you forget that I'm a bus person that sells coolers. We will be well prepared just trying to figure which of our coolers to take for our self. |

Sounds good--I'm sure your car will open some (more) eyes! Thanks for planning to take in the event--I know it is not a trivial amount of work.
Thanks for the help spreading the word also.
Also, you will be heading back to 401-land in the "good" direction on Sunday afternoon, since traffic on I-95 in this area can get rather heavy *southbound* during the summer on Sunday afternoons. _________________ Stock Steve

can't wait to see the look on the american muscle car guys faces when they get a glimpse of the hot rod...should be amusing to say the least..
i'm sure I'll get "why all this money and time?,it's still a vw"...or my favorite..."I had a 65 just like it!" _________________ WWW.401RESTOS.COM

Awesome!
I know this is not a typical laid-back "VW community" event, like the great ones we've been spoiled with around here, like Litchfield, Terryville, and CVA/Lebanon.
I did think it was worth the extra effort this year, though, to try to beat the drums about this, since VW is the Featured Marque for the first time ever, and who knows if it'll ever happen again at this event.
And it was also fun digging into to past-years' documentation of VW participation along the way.
Anyway, really appreciate all you guys' putting it on your radar screens for this year (including the CVA-ers, who've been extra-supportive for so many years--not to mention old die-hards like Clay & Chuck too, of course)! _________________ Stock Steve

before the vw scene came about i was hitting every american car show from NJ to mass...all the nationals, super chevy and even rock a billy stuff.
the vw shows are more people freindly and seems to lure you in with so many differnet kinda folk...the american shows is a ford vs chevy kinda thing and always will be...that's why it's perfect for us!!!! _________________ WWW.401RESTOS.COM
