|
|
A few fun people-type views to break up the car shots. We love the cars, but it's the people who make the old VW hobby great!
First, it's Rich (58lolight), Greg, and Chuck, at Chuck's "Masterseries" booth in the flea market area--"Got Rust? Get Masterseries!":
We are Masterseries believers, by the way--check it out at: http://www.masterseriesct.com/ - And of course, Chuck (a.k.a. vwsplitman) certainly knows his way around organizing a VW show...
Next, it's another long-time VW buddy and CT VW hobby "legend" Tom (a.k.a. tmvdubs) chillin' at his flea market space:
The guys from Cardone & Daughter Automotive (popular old car repair & resto shop, and strong VW hobby supporters, located in Westbrook, CT, ref: http://www.cardoneanddaughter.com/) were quite impressed with 401 Tim's (a.k.a. schell '59, and also the man behind RI's already-legendary "401 Restos" ref: http://401restos.com/default.aspx) monster hot rod--as we all were!!!
Finally, here are some more no-good VW troublemakers having fun at Clay & Mary's (a.k.a. WM971252 - a.k.a. "Das Bulli Haus," ref: http://www.dasbullihaus.com/) flea market space--featuring their cool '62 Hi-Roof, which is a veteran of MANY Time Machines shows over the years:

Nice to see Chuck and Tom relaxing at a show and not running around. _________________ Glenn

|
|
These were the official dash plaques that all entered show cars received for Time Machines 2011.
So, even if the CT Area Classic T-Bird Club never updated their Time Machines official web site with any VW artwork, they did come through with a nice dedicated dash plaque, to commemorate VW as the 2011 "Featured Marque."
I received one since paid my registration fee and entered my car in the show (though it was displayed strictly "do not judge"), and this is a scan of that actual plaque (about 3"x4", on aluminum stock, made by Daytona Trophy).
What do you know--"Volkswagen" is even spelled correctly!

Time Machines 2011 - The VW Badge and Dash Plaque
Volkswagen, in 2011, was the Featured Marque for the first time ever in Time Machines history, and we felt we needed to do something very special to commemorate the occasion. In addition to magnetic dash plaques, which we've done for several years, we also got some special heavy metal engraved bumper badges made up. Following are some views of them loose, and also as mounted on my '70 Bug, which I displayed at Time Machines 2011.
The badge is about 3" in diameter, highly polished & reflective, and the relief areas are highlighted with black enamel. The design is based upon the original Common Gear logo, but tweaked a bit to fit better into a circular design. The flexible magnetic dash plaque (about 2"x3") is based upon the same artwork (which is also my current avatar); black imprint on a white background...
All registered VWs in the Time Machines 2011 car show received one badge and one dash plaque.
The way I mounted my badge was using a flat bar attached to the lower bolt holes of the license plate (it's actually an early Bug license plate bracket that I happened to have), sticking out to the left just far enough to attach the badge, which I also spaced out (using a couple of fat rubber washers) a bit to clear the license plate frame. Obviously how you mount these to your vehicle (if you choose to do so, that is--I imagine some may never leave the curio cabinet or the desk drawer) is limited only by your imagination...
The dash plaque attaches nicely to the metal glove box door of a standard Bug. I happened to have a magnet showing Elvis meeting then President Richard M. Nixon, which was also black & white, which also seemed to go well. I'll show you the compliment to the Elvis/Nixon magnet a little further down...
...and for some car show amusement, I currently have this vintage Nixon-Agnew campaign plate on the front, which I would say is from right around the same time period as my '70 Bug... EDIT: I had to check Wikipedia to confirm the years Nixon served at President--it was '69 to '74; Agnew also started his VP stint in '69, however, was "outta there" in '73...
I may have a few of the badges and dash plaques left over for sale--watch my Samba classifieds, once I figure out an ad for them... _________________ Stock Steve

|
|
Thanks to CT VW Association webmaster Heather Fox for this photo from the end-of-show awards ceremony during Time Machines 2011, 7/24/2011.
The photo shows CVA Vice President Mac McDonald (left) shaking CVA President Jeremy Clayton's hand, following Jeremy's having been presented with his official "Heroes of Antique Volkswagening Award" plaque. Also visible in the photo are CVA officials Bill Arute (far left), Chris Fox (green shirt in background), and CVA member Ellie Lowell (standing next to Chris).
Thanks again to Heather for the great shot to document this occasion, of Jeremy's very well-deserved award!

My sister Georgette bought Smurfie in 1996 from Bob Dorr. She sold Smurfie in 2008 and regrets it. Here is Smurfie's website

Here's another '92 picture--looks like Bill Silvestri's cherry '68 Ghia--prior to the subsequent fitment of "2-liter" Porsche wheels. What a nice car. We understand it's with a new owner these days.
That looks like Mark Andstrom in the background of the shot, looking toward the camera, next to the maroon custom Bug. Mark formerly ran a very highly trusted VW shop in Central Village, CT. I believe he is involved in another different career these days. |

I was able to put my hands on some Time Machines 1992 VW images first (I'm sorry, but, for whatever reason, I had to convert my scanned images to gifs for the system to accept them--if I can somehow figure out how to upload conventional jpg's again, I'll definitely do so...).
(EDIT: I was able to upload a jpg of this picture from another computer, so I replaced the gif. The jpg looks better on the page.)
This looks like our old buddy Bob Dorr's turquoise '63 Bug. That might even be Bob himself standing behind the Bug (green shirt & sunglasses). Bob was the hard-working president of CVA for many years in the early 1990s.

Wow, great to hear that Smurfie lives on! I think that's Bob Dorr himself in the background of the shot with dark sunglasses and green shirt...
Incidentally, Bob showed up at Time Machines 2012 this past July, driving his '58 Bug--was great to see him still kicking around on the old-VW scene! _________________ Stock Steve

Smurfie was sold to Dave Whittick. Georgette created a facebook group called "Smurfie the 1963 Ragtop - Found-Yes!"
When she sold Smurfie to Dave we lost contact for a few years and he found the group and posted there. Here is the link to the group (you need to be logged on to facebook):
