**PLEASE REFER TO THIS FIRST POSTING - AND/OR OUR ONGOING SAMBA AD http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=196458 - FOR ANY IMPORTANT UPDATES--THANKS**

Hi Folks,
This year's Time Machines event will be unique & special as the organizers have recently told me that the "Featured Marque" this year will be none other than Volkswagen!
We've been sponsoring the "VW only" class in this very large & long-running Connecticut antique auto show (with large flea market) for many years now--always open to all stock & modified VWs, at least 25 years old or older--and it seems the organizers have finally sensed the slow but sure growth of the class and interest in old VWs in general in our state (thanks in no small part to the CT VW Association - www.ctvwa.org and also Chuck Pisconski's fantastic "Litchfield" and "Terryville" annual events).
I have yet to see the official Time Machines web site - http://www.tbirdsofconn.org/timemach.html - updated with information about VW being this year's featured marque, but I can say that the event will be happening on Sunday, July 24th, 2011, at the Guilford Fairgrounds in Guilford, CT, rain or shine. And, as noted, all VWs, stock & modified, up to and including this year's cut-off year (a sliding 25-year old or older scale--meaning that VWs up to & including model year 1986) can participate this year.
With VW being this year's Featured Marque, we'll also have some sort of "special display area" prominent on the show field to show off our cars, and Common Gear Antique VW Society, in addition to sponsoring the VW class, as we have always done, is also working to try & make this year just a little bit more special than usual.
Along the way, I've been going back and look at some of my old print photos from past Time Machines events (which up until a few years ago, were held in Durham, CT), and will try to post a few in subsequent installments.
If I happen to have mis-identified any of the photos, by the way, please do feel free to chime in an correct me--always nice to be able to present accurate info...
Here are a couple of "official reports" currently published at our site:
2010 = http://home.comcast.net/~commonsteve/TimeMachines2010/TM10Report.html - and also Greg Mattesen's companion page: http://home.comcast.net/~commonsteve/TimeMachines2010/GMTM10.html
2009 = http://home.comcast.net/~commonsteve/TimeMachines2009/TM09Report.html
2008 = http://home.comcast.net/~commonsteve/TimeMachines2008/TM08VWReport.html
And here's also our ongoing Samba ad: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=196458
*4/26/2011 UPDATE - As of yesterday I've received some special commemorative incentives that I had ordered, to be able to hand out to properly-registered participating Antique Volkswagens in Time Machines 2011 car show. There are only 75 pieces of these special commemorative incentives, and they will be handed out to the first 75 Antique VWs to get there, and get themselves properly registered and onto the show field, within the Featured Marque class (this does not include flea market vehicles and also does not include VWs that may have chosen to register into some other car show class). The Time Machines 2011 car show is rain or shine, as it has always been, so “I had best intentions of being there” is not going to cut it--sorry. Anyway, I figured we had to do something a little special in recognition of VW being this year’s Time Machines “Featured Marque.” OK, that’s all I’m going to say for now!
*5/18/2011 UPDATE - I have a supply of the Official Time Machines 2011 printed flyers for the event in-hand now also, and have scanned all of the printed information on them--the scans are shown in a later installment to this thread (near the top of page 2), but here are the links for quick reference:
Main Flyer Page Top: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/806851.jpg
Main Flyer Page Bottom (with preregistration forms):

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/806850.jpg
Back outside of folded flyer:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/806854.jpg
I have also dropped off a supply of the flyers at Cardone & Daughter Automotive in Westbrook, CT, so if you're in the area, you can also grab one there directly.
Please check back, post up any quesitons, comments, etc., also look for any old Time Machines VW photos from the past that you may have and post 'em!
Happy Volkswagening, and talk to you again soon,

I was able to put my hands on some Time Machines 1992 VW images first (I'm sorry, but, for whatever reason, I had to convert my scanned images to gifs for the system to accept them--if I can somehow figure out how to upload conventional jpg's again, I'll definitely do so...).
(EDIT: I was able to upload a jpg of this picture from another computer, so I replaced the gif. The jpg looks better on the page.)
This looks like our old buddy Bob Dorr's turquoise '63 Bug. That might even be Bob himself standing behind the Bug (green shirt & sunglasses). Bob was the hard-working president of CVA for many years in the early 1990s.

Here's another '92 picture--looks like Bill Silvestri's cherry '68 Ghia--prior to the subsequent fitment of "2-liter" Porsche wheels. What a nice car. We understand it's with a new owner these days.
That looks like Mark Andstrom in the background of the shot, looking toward the camera, next to the maroon custom Bug. Mark formerly ran a very highly trusted VW shop in Central Village, CT. I believe he is involved in another different career these days. _________________ Stock Steve

Definitely appreciate your & Mary's very faithful TM participation for so many years, Clay, either with your hi-roof in the show, or over in the flea market area, with our compatriots Chuck and Tom also.
2011 should be quite interesting, with the organizers finally having selected VW as the featured marque!
Let's hope for no rain this year! _________________ Stock Steve

Steve,
The black, big window beetle looks very much like Peter Cook's '58, based on the interior color and mudflaps. Peter is still the BSVWOC (Bay State VW owner's club) president. I also know that he still has the '58 and it's running good with a freshly rebuilt carb. |
Thanks Stan--I'd agree that Peter's '58 could very well be that black Sedan. Glad to hear it's still running strong!
The only other possibility that springs to mind this minute is another black '58 that was MA-based at that time: Mike Dane's (though I think it's now been living up in VT with a new owner for several years). Definitely will have to do some research on this next chance I get... _________________ Stock Steve

Here are a bunch of 1997 images--I'll do my best to provide some identification where I can...
Mike Berch and his '57 Sunroof Bug:
John Kelly's '66 (I think) Camper. John was also a hard-working CVA president for many years, following Bob Dorr's stint. Thanks to John for all his great efforts developing the club and keeping it rolling for so many years!
There's that beautiful white early '60s Bug again--I will run across the owner's name soon, and add it. As I recall, he was from Milford, CT:
Jimmy Arcucci's beautiful semi-custom '70 Bug:
I *think* this beautiful tan '71 or so Super Beetle was owned by George Oleyar. Note the wooden Bug-shaped display plaques, and also a wooden Bug engine replica displayed in asee-thru case in the car's trunk:
Kool Kamo Thing. I miss the CT blue plates...
Another view of the Kamo Type 181 Thing. That looks like Chuck P. and his family visiting next door with Clay & Mary Smith & their Hi Roof Panel Truck:
Finally, Clay & Mary Smith's super cool '62 Hi Roof Panel Truck from Eastern CT!

Let's look at some Time Machines 1998 VW images today. Looked like another nice day in Durham, CT...
Overall views (that's my well-traveled former '68 Bug on the end--it is now with a new owner as of a couple summers ago):
Onto Bugs--first Chuck P's awesome '50:
Most of these other Bugs I don't have identification for (at this time anyway):
I think this beautiful beige '67 belonged to John Watson:
Randall Bish's super-awesome '63 Sunroof from Essex, CT:
Joe Snow's Bus in the flea market:
Some classy convertibles next:
This spectacular '72 Super I believe belongs to Gil Brown from Wolcott--we know he's still driving it, as we had fun running into him at a Labor Day 2010 car show in Westbrook, CT:
That's Phil Lawlor's red '66 next to Chuck's '50 Sedan:
And Phil himself posing with his beautiful '66 Convertible. At the time I believe Phil was webmaster for the CT VW Association:
This looks to be Bug City Dave's '79:
And this '68 or '69 with unique skirts sporting a roadrunner graphic, I also don't recall the owner of, but I believe I have seen it offered for sale within the past 6 months or so here in CT:
Super-Nice Ghia (that looks to be Jack Larson's former '62 Convertible Bug next to it also):
And we'll finish up our tour of TM1998 VWs with some buggies--the second of which as I recall is an authentic Meyers Manx (check out his cool CT plate!):

Here are some Time Machines 2002 images.
First, a couple of overall views (looks like my old '68 was wearing turtlebacks that year!):
Love the colors and variations:
Well known early VW authority John Henry from MA drove his superb '50 Sunroof Bug down to Durham this year:
Don't know who's gorgeous Ghia, but it was a looker indeed:
Awesome '61 or so Sedan with wide whites and skirts--classic!
That's Greg Mattesen's beautiful turqouise '63 Bug in the foreground:
Fantastic looking Bay Bus:

These are dash plaques that have been made up especially for VW Class participants in the Time Machines car shows, from the year 2000 and onward (these are *completely separate* from the "official" Time Machines dash plaques that cars get when they register for the show).
They are flexible material with magnetic backing and I think either 1 1/2" x 3" or 2" x 3" in size. We order these from Rallye Productions in Waukesha, WI; they do a nice job with them, and they are reasonably priced.
The '04 and '06 plaque artworks are originals, courtesy noted Type III specialist John Jaranson--thanks again John!
Anyway, I generally walk around and hand 'em out once the VWs get themselves parked in the VW display class.
Yes, we, ahem, may be doing one again for 2011...

Here are some Time Machines 2001 images that I found and scanned from my original photo prints...
First, some overall views of another pretty healthy-looking turnout of old VWs:
Had my old '50 Bug there this time:
I think these are Peter and Paula Brink's primo rides:
Noted hot rod Bug builder Don Cartsounis and his slick '62:
Can't remember this fellow's name--cool plate and cool car, though!
And some more beautiful cars in the VW class for TM2001:
And finally, a beefy-looking *two-door* Thing--neat!

Here are a bunch of 2003 Time Machines VW photos (event still located in Durham, CT that year). As with most if not all of the preceding images in this thread, these views are scanned from my original photo prints. Happy to be able to share these with you today:
First, overall type views:
My old '68 Sedan was lookin' kool with fat Sprint Stars & fat 185/65 radials:
Super-nice early convertible--sorry don't have a name to put with the car. Hmm, I guess it's a '59 from New York (sorry, I looked at the plate!):
Matt Hermann's super-nice late convertible:
Couple really nice bay campers:
John Kelly's awesome '54 Sedan:
Mac (a.k.a. dedicated long-time CVA official Milt McDonald) and his superb fire engine red '72 Super:
Don Cartsounis' '62 hot rod Bug:
Randall Bish's superb '63 Sunroof Bug:
Clay & Mary Smith's '62 hi-roof panel truck:
Kool Thing:
Awesome VW-powered trike:
Finally, our VW buddy Mike Bonczewski, better known for his superb, super low-miles Savannah Beige '70 Bug--but this time showing his "Chevy" or something?! We love ya, Mike! If you do parts business with a certain VW dealership in Stratford, CT, you might recognize Mike from behind the parts counter...
