Well, we've got an iPad that entered our home for Christmas.
http://www.apple.com/ipad/
We love it, it is fast, it is intuitive it is a wonderful product. (please don't go Apple bashing here, if you don't like Apple just keep quiet and sit on your hands)(Yeah I know, I drank the KoolAide )I run Windows Computers though so go figure ....
My 94 year old Mother wanted an iPad 2 so she can FaceTime with her great grandchildren and also purchased my daughter an iPod2 to make this happen.
I currently have both the iPad and the iPad 2 in my home while I set up the iPad2 for my Mom.
A few observations....
The camera is ok. The resolution produces a very grainy photo on the large display. It is ok for what it does but isn't what I'd call a wonderful picture.
The operating system is the same on both of them so there really aren't any comparisons to be made.
They say the processor is twice as fast. Hmmmmm From operating them side by side and going to the same Web links or doing similar tasks, there is no noticeable speed difference. It is probably faster but when you have actions already happening in a fraction of a second and then you cut that fraction down to a smaller fraction, do you really notice it? I don't.
The sleep function with the magnetic cover is very cool. Possibly the best feature of upgrading.
I think I'll wait for iPad3 before I upgrade myself or add a 2nd unit to my home.
Sure, the unit is thinner and lighter, the sleep cover is nice as is the camera if you want to FaceTime. I can live without all of these "upgrades" right now so I'll pass on the 2 and await the next upgrade which will hopefully have a better screen and USB ports. I could always hope for Flash but we all know THAT's NOT gonna happen!!
Just thought I'd share my observations. I know many hate Apple, you really don't need to tell us that again here, we're tired of hearing it.
If you have additional observations or knowledge about the 2, that would be interesting to hear about.
Thanks

So what do you use it for?
I never really understood the point of having these. Just seems like an iphone with bigger screen.
Seems like the only great thing it does is its screen size for reading news or reading books like kindle (and maybe making presentations). Everything else is better done on a macbook to type doccuments or browse internet and iphone/ipod, listen to music play games etc.
I know it was a gift, im just wondering who they are marketing it too, besides Apple freaks who swear everything is awesome. |

It is a portable unit that all but takes the place of a computer. You don't have that awkward keyboard / pivoting screen issue that laptops provide.
We surf the net
email
play angry birds (of course! Right??)
various games
I installed PAGES so it is a word processor
Face Book
etc.
Almost everything you do on your laptop you do on you iPad with a fraction of the weight and a size that you can actually see. Our iPhones are great but they are small.
I was one of the ones that laughed at them upon their introduction, I'm sorry Apple, I didn't know how great they were!
We plan on getting a 2nd and leaving the computers alone, especially when traveling, just carry a wireless router to plug into the Hotel's internet socket or tether to an iPhone.

I find it useful. it is my 2nd apple product, I also have an iphone. I have a work laptop, nice 17 inch dell, but I don't wanna lug that thing around. It is like a big iphone. books, internet surfing on the couch, etc. I bought concert tickets the other night while at the bar. all things I can do with my laptop, but 5 lbs lighter.
my iphone is jailbroken so I've had wifi hotspot for about a year now, very convenient |

i guess the ipad has all those little bells and whistles but laptops win at the end of the day. |

It's not a question of which is better. They are designed to meet different needs. I love my iPad. I love the touch screen. It's so much easier to
handle than a laptop due to it's compact size. I far prefer it for laying around the house and surfing the net. No hot, noisy fan blowing in my lap.The built in GPS is very convenient for road trips. I've carried it with me hiking for tracking purposes as well. Try hauling a laptop around in the woods. There are lots of apps that take advantage of the touchscreen; things you just can't do on a laptop. Reading in bed? Again, do you really want to do that with your MacBook? I looked at the MacBook Air but decided against it as it was twice the cost, no touch screen, and I already have a Mac and a PC for real computing. |

The small MacBook Air is about the same size as the iPad and has all the functionality of a regular computer. That's the way to go.
As soon as my MacBook dies, that's what I'm getting. |
