There is alot invloved in that question. Could be many things. Start with checking power to your brake master cylinder.-Jeremy

I also have a 56 oval, and do a LOT of electrical work.
EASY CHECKS--
1. Pull both leads off of the brake switch on the master cylinder. Put them together. If you have brake lights, you have a bad brake switch.
2. Make sure you have power from the fuse block to the brake switch.(It is a direct lead from the block to the switch.)(Black with red--or maybe black with yellow[usually the horn power]).
3. There is one wire going to the rear that is for the brakes. It goes into the main wiring harness which goes back to the back. It should be black with red. If you run a hot wire(one with power) to it you should get brake lights. If you do get brake lights then you have a bad wire going back.
Hope this helps...your not an idiot. |

You gotta start somewhere. All the guys who know the stuff didn't just know. You have to learn. Calling someone an idiot is not cool. I have been into it now for 8 years and I know alot but I most certainly don't know everything. My advice is dig into things and see how they work. The mechanics of a VW are as simple as a car gets. I tell folks who are interested in getting an aircooled VW that you must either be a mechanic or have the $$ to pay for one. They do require maintanence. Anyhow good luck-Jeremy

First of all, i just got this car about a year ago and ive never worked on an engine or anyhting. Were you born knowing how to work on vw's or what, mr know it all. Its people like you who scare off people like me trying to learn about their cars. Anyways, what kinda car do you have? Post a pic or something. Lets see your engine. What are your quarter mile times? Whats your reaction time? Show us! Idiot. You were probably picked on in high school or something for being dumb and now your taking it out on people just for asking a question. This is a vw community, get out of it!

Good for you. I glad you're such an expert at this hooby. Atleast thats what it is to me, just a hobby and guess what, my bug is lowered to the ground, i took out the oval window to put in a larger one, and i cut the dash to put in a new stereo system....Hope that makes your day! and another thing, when i get tired of it, im not going to sell it. Im gonna take it to the junk yard and made into a cube and then im gonna UPS it to your house. HAHAHAHA. YOu take this whole VW thing much to seriously. Its just a damn hobby...ooh ooh and guess what i drive on the weekend? ACURA INTEGRA....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA(Sinister laugh) GO back to your service station, Gommer Pyle

howzit, if all fails, then replace the brakelight switch at the master cylinder. it's a cheap investment!
