Picked this '71 up over the weekend. It has been with the second owner since 1974 and off the road since 1996. It was parked under a big shade tree so there is moss on the top and front. The interior is complete.
I plan to clean it up and have it on the road soon:

I love threads like this. Clean it up and enjoy it. I'm sure that paint will buff out very nicely. Check out how VDubTech does it, he is the master at buffing out buses! _________________ 1978 Westfalia |

Thanks for the feed back. This is my first Westfalia so I will have lots of questions. I have been scouring through the threads looking for the preferred canvas top, pop top seals and upper cot canvas. Lots of info. to absorb.
This weekend I plan to spend some time cleaning it up. I've ordered new tires, Continental Vanco 2's, which should arrive in a couple days. |

Yes, the bus is in San Diego. It was delivered through FL in 1971 and in 1974 it moved to San Diego....or so the story goes. I went with the Continentals because they were listed on the mcode plate. |

Last night I pulled the bumpers, the apron & decklid, all lights, the windshield and the left rear window. I also removed the spare from the front. It's pretty rusty at the bottom window frames, as expected. The good news, I found the original paint VW emblem for the front which will go back on once I weld up the extra holes in the nose. |

I dig the pinstriped tool box.
CLR is going to do wonders for that bus. |

Worked on the brakes today. The front rotors are thin and need replacing:
I CLR'ed and buffed out the left rear corner and it turned out pretty good. Check the rain gutter for comparison.
The before shot:

Nice find!!!!!!! Aeromech is close by too!!!! Gary has helped me out with a lot of things Buswise. I'd take that Beetle muffler off and put on a Bus muffler or a nice header and a quiet pak muffler. _________________ '66 Beetle

Thanks. Yes, the beetle exhaust is going. I have a stock German unit that will go in its place. |

Did some more cleaning on the rear. The original paint is thin but the surface rust is coming off with the CLR treatment:

I think you're in over your head with that bus. I'll take it off your hands for $100.
Seriously, nice score. I want one just like that. |

Here are my Continental Vanco 2's 185 r14. I blasted and powder coated the wheels. The color is Bengal Silver which is a very close match to the original color. I scuffed the face of the wheels and painted it with L97 Chrome and had a tough time seeing where the paint was going on because of the color match. I had the balancing weights mounted on the back side of the wheels.
All wheels are date stamped 7/71 with the early style round hub holes.
I pulled the front windshield to get to the sill rust. I'll be cutting out the rust and installing a new Gerson panel which I got last week. With the windshield out a pulled the dash and will repaint.
I installed the new brake rotors and calipers. Just about ready to roll it around. |
