Hey now. Fortunately, I only made it half a block before I pulled over and torqued the lugs. Oops!

Drove about 400 miles yesterday without much issue. My speedo cable broke and I lost a center cap from a rear wheel. Maybe I can find another early at the swap. Sucks it fell off the day before the Classic.

Motor makes great power all the way through. CHT is nice and cool, but oil temp is on the high side on a long cruise. I know the VDO gauge isnt the most accurate to begin with, but i did check in boiling water before I put it in. I can keep it 235 or so at 3200ish rpm, but that's on a flat freeway. Up a big hill like that and it's over. I've got Rotella 15w-40 in there now, but think I might go down to 10w-30 after this weekend and see if that makes a difference.

Now a thought on pressure. I know I read somewhere about a service bulletin addressing flickering low pressure lights. IF my gauges are somewhat close to accurate, the oil would have to be insane hot to drop the pressure that low. Maybe it's not a fair comparison with my pump?

That oil temp is a bit high mate 235F=112C remember oil starts to break down at 120C so there isnt much wiggle room there. Also remember oil temps relate to RPM not load. I have tested this alot as have others. so the temps will only really go higher at higher RPM or ambient temperatures. get some thinner oil in there quick because the high oil temps and pressures will make your shinny new engine leak oil .... dont want that in such a shiny new car

Before you doing anything with the oiling system, try some thinner oil 15-40 is way way too thick for a fresh motor. 10W30 is all I run and I have yet to have any problems. I have used mostly VR1 syn "racing" oil, it's in the black bottle and has a good amount of ZDDP's. Sounds like the motor is plenty broke in for full synthetic.

Funny, i was just checking my vdo cht gauge and it reads 100f high when warmed up. I still have to verify the oil pressure readings.
If you have an aftermarket dual contact sensor it will come on between 6-12 psi VS the OG that triggers at 2-5 psi .

What is your pressure like at cruise? 10 psi per 1000rpm?

im not 100% but i think the vdo oil tem gauges are ok because they use a thermo-resistor not a thermo-couple like the cht gauges. this means there is no inaccuracy generated by ambient temps. so the oil temps should be pretty accurate. but just my 2c take it or leave it.

Ok. I did the parking lot oil change to 10w-30. It started billowing clouds of white smoke instantly. Spy Hunter style. My heart dropped...

So it was that damn check valve from the breather to the exhaust. Oil was dripping out of the tailpipe from the vacuum. Unhooked it and after 10 miles it's all fine. It's not going back on.

So... My oil seems just as hot if not hotter than before. Pressure has gone down a lot, but it does meet the 10# per 1k rpm cruising.

Obviously I'll be checking my sender, anything else I should be looking at?

anything over 45psi will bypass the cooler, but if the pressure has gone down that won't be it.
where is the sensor ? sump, filter, case?

The sensor is set up just like Glenn's. Mounted in the top of the full flow filter housing directly in the flow path to the case.

I came back tonight and the sump and drain plate didn't feel THAT hot to the touch. Certainly not 230 degrees. I could keep my hand held on it...

The test I do since I am not using any oil temp/pressure gauges is the ol'spit test. spit on the top of the case, if it sizzles quickly then it's too hot, if not then it's fine.

Just in time for the Classic. Whew!

Thanks to Dave and Clatter for tool and garage use this last week. We adjusted the suspension a couple times, changed the gear oil (I've been driving back and forth to Santa Cruz to make my first 500 miles), valve adjustment, oil and filter change, added a deep sump, new exhaust check valve for the breather (1st one broke already), and a handfull of other minor things.

Other than a very small oil weep from somewhere behind the fan shroud, we're ready for the drive to LA tomorrow. See you guys on Saturday, I'm excited!

Straight like an arrow... Job well done... Congrats, buddy...
