Ventura that is......I'm putting the motor in the car tomorrow, but it's been freakin 100+ degrees.....I have a similar external filter and oil cooler setup but am running the rubber hose....i think that needs a change....anyway, if you're around Ventura we could hook up to talk story.....

Plus, it's hard to drive when you're out of the country. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Reposting these pics, I noticed some of my photobucket links were dead and it was too long ago to edit.
I do miss driving it...
I just mostly lurk now and dream of a Squareback project.

That's the draw back to using photobucket in these threads. If the pics aren't viewed often (on their site), then the links go dead.
I completely agree with you on missing driving it, as winter is here, and the T-34 is parked to keep it out of the salt. Four months of salt season is a long wait. Although we're getting closer to it coming back out. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Man, this was an epic build thread! Once I started I couldn't stop, and the fact that the car was finished so nicely was a great conclusion.
Shame you can't bring it with you, but hey - something to look forward to when you return.
Great attention to cleanliness and detailing the small and out of sight things. Gave me some inspiration to clean up my squareback this summer. Mind if I borrow your drivetrain while its just sitting there? That engine is a drool machine and must drive nice on the open road - just curious, how did it pull and what were your freeway speeds with the 3.88r&p?
Cheers! _________________ 1967 Squareback |

Thank you.
On the transaxle, I think the 3.88 was the right choice. I could cruise all day long. I had read all of Russ Wolfe's posts about his preference for the 3.88 R/P and decided it would be good with my motor. I posted the rest of the gearing somewhere, probably in a freeway flyer thread. The motor pulls nice, but to be honest, leaves a little to be desired. I want something with a bit more umph!
So, I've been collecting all the bits for a 2270 Type 4 motor based on the Raby 'Torquer' motor that was in HotVW's. And big Porsche brakes too. I'd like to build a faux panel van that's over the top with all the performance goodies. Couple more years to start though... Meanwhile I'll just keep snatching up parts for it as they're available. _________________ 69 Fastback Build

I'm amazed. Just found this thread and went through the entire thing...what a great job! Thanks for all the detailed pics! So helpful and inspirational! I've just started working on my '70 Fasty found in a Danish barn...so a bit more rust than your California beauty! Looking at your thread and BerT3's...I feel a body off resto coming on...just need a dose of courage! _________________ Cheers, David

I got them on eBay. They're Ramflo filters, made by Lynx.
Here's their website: http://www.lynxcorp.com.au/main.php?idx=home
They seem a bit harder to find in the US, mostly in AU. Maybe Vlad will hook you up with getting some shipped! _________________ 69 Fastback Build

Fast forward 5 whole years...
As some of you know, I've spent the last 21 years in the Navy. My time is up now and next weekend I'll officially be a veteran.
I'm currently in San Diego for my final out-processing and had my Fastback removed from storage and shipped here for pick up. Today was the big day - almost.
The storage contractor sent me a note a couple weeks ago that one of the fuel lines to one of the carbs was leaking a little. So, I first Uber'd myself to Napa to pick up some new hose - at least to change what was in the engine compartment. No one want's a ball of fire on the 'first' drive. Then another Uber to the storage/pick up facility.
They brought the car to the inspection area for me to check everything out. All looks good and it's been well cared for. No issues that I could find other than the supposed fuel leak/weep. We'll I couldn't find any obvious leaks/wetness, so left the cover off and started it up. Would not idle, at all.
I fiddled around with the idle adjustment screws figuring I could get it close to in sync, which I did. Had it running and idling mostly ok in about 20 minutes. But then I noticed the problem. One of idle air adjustment screws had backed out entirely and was spurting vapor every stroke. I searched in all the nooks of the tin for it, but it's gone.
Not wanting to drive a ready to burn flamethrower, I left it there and will make plans to trailer it back.
Disappointing, but still exciting to see and know that it won't take much to have it back on the road.
Last, I think the starter needs replaced. It has a brand new battery, and when the starter would engage it wouldn't always turn over, just kind of buzzed. But when it did, it would run fine. I can't imagine anything is loose, but who knows, it will need a thorough going through.
A departing pic, because this did happen today.

Agreed, Welcome Home Brent, and Thank You for your service.
Now once you and your car are really back home, you take it out for some exercise. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
