Here's an email from my sister today:
| Quote: | | This is a picture of a mountain lion that was trapped and shot last week in Mountain Ranch. It had killed a friend of Frank's 120# lab and then a goat. So they put the dead goat in a trap and the kitty came back and they trapped it. |
Sad that such a beautiful animal was put down, but pretty scary if you live in that remote area.

I thought they "trapped" it? Don't you have to have a permit to kill a cougar?
That sucks. I hate seeing Cougars and Bears killed.

There was a mountain lion shot in my town right before I moved here in 2006.
I have never seen a bear up here, but I have spotted wild turkeys, a moose, an eagle, fifty deer all in one field (I stopped and counted), pheasants, and a wolf. These were all seen within the last year and within a mile of my town.
Edit: And within five miles of my town I have seen an owl, various other birds of prey (falcons or hawks, I'm not sure), more moose (visitors from our neighbors to the North), and some Geese.
Within ten miles I have seen foxes. North Dakota is a wonder to behold if one takes the time. I love this place. |

| Those lions that you only see on the critter cams don't scare me. They are there, they know where you are and tend to go the other way. Much more dangerous to drive the windy road to your house in the woods. That cat that killed a dog and has a taste for domestic animals is a very different organism. Shoot out the "bad" ones a new one will move in and you will never know that it's there. |

We know and respect the outdoors here. I have three kids, two of which are my teenaged sons that camp and backpack often with their friends and schools. We sit outside by the chiminea all the time and we stay close to the house in the evenings. We have a Border Collie that has to come in the house at night. It's usually the other critters that we have to watch out for, like the Javelinas which are kinda like wild boars. _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us. That REALLY bums me out... Dammit. | There is no permit to hunt lions, as they are protected. If they are caught killing your livestock/domestic animals, however, you can legally kill them at will/on sight. |

That was my point, kinda. I'm sure that's the same lion but putting out a dead animal carcass would most certainly get a lot of attention. I read trapped as in a cage , then they shot it. I guess fish and game doesn't relocate lions. _________________ I don't mind eccentric people i just don't care for shit heads.

They would just be moving a problem from one place to another. Lions are doing well here in the west. Beautiful and awe inspiring beasts worthy of respect and adoration. Still, when one starts to prey on domestic critters...
I don't hunt, I have seen a lion in the wild and know every bird, mammal, tree and most flowers in my part of the world. Still a problem cat is best dealt with as this one was. PS I have to get myself a game camera. |

Out here in the local canyons, a cougar was in the act of killing a donkey in the owners corral. He shot/killed it. He had his tom turkey disappear a few nights earlier. Various other pets/yardbirds/stock had gone missing in this tightly built area over the prior weeks. It was a tagged cat, and whe the F&G guy came to retrieve it, said it had been moved prior and was a "known problem cat". No legal prob's w/ this kill.
On the flipside, in this same general area, a few weeks later a resident saw a cat across the ravine. A few animals had disappeared recently, so this guy decided to shoot it... even though it was not actively killing/stalking anything. He was arrested for the kill as well as a slough of other related charges. Facing up to 3 years in prison, and fines in the thousands.
He explained that a couple of years back, a lion had stalked and attacked a woman hiking the area, and the man who saved her was attacked then killed. She survived. The warden let him know that cat had been killed the same day as the attack, and had no possible connection to his illegal kill.
If you want to get sick to your stomach, check out the show "wild justice". The amount of poaching happening nowdays is unreal. |

It is actually LEGAL to hunt and kill a Mountain Lion in Arizona. See the pictures in the link below to a hunt my Step Son was on this hunt and the Mountain Lion was actually tree'd in a 30 ft Saguaro.

There's been some mountain lion sightings / killings here in mid MO lately. From what I can tell, the ones that were killed were not posing a threat, and that pisses me off. Rednecks around here are all too ready to blast something just because. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

I can see putting it down BUT you live in a canyon. In lion country. It's only a matter of time, really. We have lions here too and have had a lot more sightings in the last few years that I think is directly related to urban sprawl. The local sightings were in suburban neighborhoods.
I do watch Wild Justice. Liars and poachers are my number one hated things (even more than staged hunts and bear hunters). That show is filled with them. Well, tweekers too but I love to see them get a few guys out of the thousands that are killing anything just for fun. _________________ I don't mind eccentric people i just don't care for shit heads.

Here in town, we had a deer carcass found buried in a sand box next to a swing set.
My other neighbors out where I live, have found fresh killed deer next to their house on a few occasions. It's natural....
Now, the anger that a few have here about the re-release of the mexican grey wolves is un-real. I love wolves. _________________ "Okay, so there's 6 beers and 5 of us. You know what this means don't you? 4 of you are going to have to leave."

Lion hunting usually consists of following radio collared hounds to a tree that has a treed lion in it. While the cat tries to hide behind a branch it is shot off its perch. Said 'hunter' then has it mounted in pose that makes one think it was charging and shot from the hip in mid leap. Not anything I would ever want to be involved in or associated with. It is a shame when a lion has to be destroyed and yes, we are the ones that moved into their range. _________________ "Enjoy every Sandwich" Warren Zevon |
