You will need the "Speed Sensor" which can be bought from:
Speedometer Service Company
5801 W. Villard Ave.
Milwaukee, WI 53218
Phone 414-463-6660
It cost me 98.50 plus shipping back in 2004.
It still uses your old speedo cable which runs from the wheel to the sender, then is tuned to an electric signal the speedo can read.

Unless it has specific adapter for VW cable for front wheel drive there is adapter issues..... Cable ends on VW cable have different thread than hall effect sender...
http://www.egauges.com/vdo_indS.asp?Sender=VW_GM_Cable&PN=16-9290-0
This is why this one makes it all so easy... IT includes speedometer cable and besides all the hall effect senders are electrically the same...

gotchya... I'm one of those people that just fills up every 250 miles or so because my stock fuel sender hasn't worked properly for years.. I also have a "defrost" rag, and wear gloves and a second jacket as a "heater" _________________ -pariah (just a novice from "that other VW site")
