more newbie questions here...

about to put my pistons back in, and i was peering around in the case first. noticed this wear pattern on all the camshaft lobes.

pulled out a few of the lifters... no scratches or pitting on them and their faces are flat when held against a straightedge. there are faint marks of concentric circles but they certainly cannot be felt.

is this a normal appearance for a used camshaft??

cool... that's what i was hoping to hear. i always run synthetic anyway (except i guess when i break in the new piston rings i just installed).

i'm surprised i didn't find more photos on here of camshafts in different states of wear. most of the ones i've seen in my life have been either brand new or destroyed.

what are the two metals that i'm seeing? is one a plating over the other that has worn off partially? or is it a deposit of some sort?

Camshaft wear? I'd worry more about camshaft bearings, especially the one nearest the flywheel. Did you see any flecks of metal in the oil that you last drained from the sump?

nope. and i had chemical analysis done on the previous oil change and none of the wear metals were too high. think i'm gonna button this engine back up and save my money and patience for an engine with a turbo...
