1977 2.0 stock FI
I have a no start issue and I believe it might be due to a sloppy distributor.
I am not getting any spark at the coil.
When I checked under my dist. cap I noticed that I can pretty much just spin the rotor without any resistance. It should sort of snap back, correct?
When I pull out the distributor there is a lot of play at the bottom end. Below are pics of the play and the teeth of the distributor that look kinda chewed.
I'm I on the right track? Do I need a new distributor?
thanks

I've been trying to get this thing seated so that the teeth on the distributor are in the drive slots. I can get it in there only if I apply direct downward pressure on the rotor. When I release that pressure the teeth just don't grab the slots.
A while back I purchased one of these:
http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=186504
I could never get it to work and gave up on it. But the teeth on this one do seat well in the drive slots and the engine turns the rotor as it should.
So, I think the problem lies in my chewed up distributor teeth and I probably need some kind of replacement or rebuild. It doesn't seem like the felt washer would solve this. Or would it?
Thoughts? |

You've pretty well answered your own question here (the washer isn't felt BTW), the condition of the teeth on that drive dog isn't helping the matter either.. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Busdaddy- to clarify, are you suggesting that the washer will solve this or that I need to get something in there with good teeth?
Thanks!
Btw- how does one get those washers on the shaft? |

The washer will do the "pushing down" for you, it's job will be easier with a less chewed up drive dog. Drive the pin that's under the coiled retainer out to remove the dog but mark it first because it goes together 2 ways and one is wrong. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I was able to get my bs going with my bus depot distributor. I couldn't get it going with the pertronix but I was able to swap points in and get it going.
To get the condenser from my old distributor to fit in the BD unit I had to shave the plastic clip part to fit in the round hole.
Is there a different condenser that is meant for a round opening?
Thanks for the help so far. |
