| My son just got back from Cancun and said,"dad you'd have been in heaven down there". I of course thought he was talking about the ladies on the beaches, but no he said that 90% of the cars down there were bugs. I knew Mexico was making bugs after Germany quit but do they still? He said most were beat up but some nice ones too. Just wondering if there is a story behind this or not. |

Vw of mexico made the old style bug until 2003. They used them as taxi's but i think they are slowly getting rid of them now.

because they cannot be legally imported into the US.
i have one customer who has one.

 It is possible to import a Mexican manufactured VW Beetle into the US, but the costs of making the car conform to US DOT and EPA emissions standards is kinda $$
Just to start with, any vehicle manufactured after 1995, would have to have the OBD II compliant software and hardware installed. Just the cost of wiring up the vehicle would make the importation of the vehicle tough, As if that wasn't enough, you'd have to post bond to get the vehicle into the country and it would be impounded at the port of entry until said bond is posted. The process is not impossible, but for anything 1995 and newer, the costs and finding someone who could certify compliance with US DOT & EPA emissions requirements not to forget U.S. safety glass standards and the seat belts will need to be changed out all that stuff is not cheap. Specialist grey market companies (At one time there was one in AZ. close to the Mexican border )that would change them to meet U.S. standards and specialize in certification that could do the job, but at a cost that would floor you. Changing the Pan is one way to get around alot of that b.s. but you still have safety issues to contend with. try this site.

The glass and belts are DOT compliant, no need to change them. Lights comply too.
If you find a 86 or older in good shape, since it's more than 25 years old, you don't have to meet the US standards.

Harsh. So close too. Presumably you can benefit from parts like panels etc? Can you import Brazilian Bays into the US? They get imported into the UK and converted into campers by a number of companies. And sell for a great deal.

You must be new here  . Hang around the fattie threads and you hear about them all the time. What blows my mind is I see them sell for the price of ovals. One won the late model category at the last show I went to. It was a 2003, not really difficult to have a 2003 in great condition, efin cheaters

I can see that. My 1600DP is right out of a mexi, only draw back is not being able to get tune-up kits with the right plugs. I wouldn't kick a mexibeetle out of bed, just surprised they get a "get out of jail free card" from the purest for being fatties.

| the mexi-beetles are pretty comon over here(dominican republic) in 1998 they were used as a police car. there are lots of chassis and fuel injected engines over here. |

More on the upper level.
These are all confiscated pirate taxis. Every one of them is slated to go straight to the crusher.

The green and white paint scheme was the official colours of all taxis in Mexico City. Every one of the cars in that car jail were pirate taxis. Their owners didn't have a taxi licence. The gov't sets up roadblocks and confiscates the cars. The bail is equal to $2000 to get your car back, then you also have to repaint it in the jail before you leave. Since most aren't worth that much, most cars remain in jail. They get shipped north where they get the death penalty with no parts removed.

that really sucks.. so many good parts..
interesting how the mexican government doesnt sell them... or atleast like an auction kind of thing.. maybe to real taxi drivers |

They want them crushed so they won't go right back on the street as a pirate taxi again.
