I can't tell where you are located, but I found it here: http://www.intermountainwood.com/
Maybe there is one near you. The 3mmx5'x5' baltic birch panels were $9.xx a sheet. _________________ ~ Dan ~

I just got some 1/8" paneling from Home Depot to replace mine. Looks to be about the same thickness to me. And since 25mm=1 inch, 1/8" is around 3mm. Not exactly but hey... _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia

I tried my Home Depot and Lowes and the thinnest they had was 1/4". (I did not ask about special ordering it though.) If you have a Westy and are buying it to replace your headliner, then you need the European 5'x5' sheets anyway. _________________ ~ Dan ~

I almost came to that conclusion too. You are probably not looking in the right place. Instead of the sheet goods section in the lumber area (where the 1/4" stuff is), look over in the paneling area (back of the store here). They have thin paneling with fake and real woodgrain. Also white melamine surfaced stuff for shower stalls, etc. It's 1/8". I paid $18 for one 4X8 sheet, which will provide more than enough material for the whole bus.
I also need to re-do my interior ceiling, as the orig white paper is half peeled off. I thought about just removing those panels, cleaning the surfaces, and priming and painting them white. I thought wood might be nice up there, but white is original, and will reflect light in the interior better. Wood would contribute to a darker look. Already dark enough inside with the green metal, upholstery, carpeting, curtains, and dark wood paneling. _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia

I used the 1/8" panel from Home Depot on my sliding door and it worked fine. Might be a little thicker than ideal because I had to push like mad to get some of the buttons to snap into place. However, a little extra thickness helps make it more resiliant against steel-toed boots. _________________ '71 Campmobile. |

Push like "mad" no more, with these variable depth panel clips/retainers from NAPA! I know they're not original, but they look just the same as the old ones when installed, only like new.

Yes they are black plastic. The same as the original ones that came off my bus. Some broke when removed, and others stretched out of shape. And they were faded and discolored, so I thought it best to replace them. If yours are metal, then I guess you'd want to replace them with the same. You might check the auto parts stores and see if they have something similar to these, but metal. _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia

Hope you got 5x5's and not 4x8's. _________________ The best thing that anyone can do for their Bay is get the Volkswagen of America Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley. Without it the bus is pretty much doomed.

Don't know if you have them near you, but I got really cool Bamboo 1/8" sheets from Menards. They had a big selection of other ones too. I used it to replace my headliner as well as my panels. Looks pretty good. Was pretty cheap. _________________ '78 Riviera Camper, '71 Transporter

the wood (1/8" which they say is 2.6 mm, vs 3mm for the original- home depot had 1/4") has a skunk stripe on side a, and side b looks better anyway, But the grain is in the wrong direction, so i gotta splice the two halves to make it wide sideways so the grain looks right, not to mention it won't curve into the ceiling the right way with the grain going across the car- after carefully tracing the pattern of the old one onto the new wood, and then cutting it free with a razor knife, it looks good sitting there- and it goes back in ok, too- Voila new woodgrained headliner

So you didn't "Search" or get 5x5's. _________________ The best thing that anyone can do for their Bay is get the Volkswagen of America Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley. Without it the bus is pretty much doomed.
