I just installed an altenator of 65 which I am converting to 12 v. It looks like this altenator has an internal voltage regulator. It has 4 connection. my question is does anyone has a wiring diagram for this type of altenator? |

Yeah, if you have a 3-terminal plug plus a separage 8mm stud, then you have an externally regulated alternator. Does it look something like one of these?

Bill,
The Motorola regulator works with a Bosch alternator so i'd assume the Bosch regulator will work with the Motorola regulator. _________________ Glenn

I have done this same alternator/reg combo twice now. It needs an external regulator. Autozone has them for $29.99, just ask for a regulator. Part #VR650. It's the same 12v reg for alternator for any bug 68 and up, I even think it's the same for bay buses.
Here is how you wire it:
Just cut the plug off the end of the regulator and wire it to the alternator(starting from right) red, brown, green to the corresponding colors on the reg. And DONE! _________________ BarryL wrote:

No problem Bill. I appreciate all the info and help I get on here, so when I have a chance to help out I do. I know being on here has made my life a little easier, so I try to do the same for others. _________________ BarryL wrote:

Just wanted to double check before I do this. I also have a rebuilt 1600 dp that I have installed in a 67'. Wired up most of everything except for the alternator. The engine came out of one of my 74'. The alternator/Generator looks like the one in the pics in this post. How can you tell if you have an interal/external regulator? Pleaase confirm If I need the part number mentioned in this post and where should I mount the regulator? Also according to the wie drawing in this post can I bypass the starter solenoid and go direct to the battery?
Thanks for the replies. _________________ Banging on all four cylinders.... |

Internally regulated alternator have two connections on top - one push-on and one bolt-on. Externally regulated alternators have 4 connections, one bolt-on and three push-on terminals in a "U" shape for a for a round plug to fit onto. More examples:

Yep, looks to be the last external one. I seen the wiring diagram that was drawn up. The auto zone regulator will work fine? _________________ Banging on all four cylinders.... |

If I have the external regulator from a 74' can I use that instead of the aftermarket one from Autozone? _________________ Banging on all four cylinders.... |

It is a motorola and I believe it is the one that was used with the engine I have installed now when it was in my 74. _________________ Banging on all four cylinders.... |
