I'll look in the Bentley when I get home today, but thought I would solicit input here in the meantime.
What is the procedure for removing and installing the needle bearings and phenolic bushings in a type-3 beam?
I have a spare (69) beam and an NOS set of phenolic bushings and am going to try to come up with one good beam for my 68. The beam in the car is pretty sloppy.

There is some subtlety to this. Bearings and bushings came in several sizes. If the bearings are shot, then probably so is the torsion arm where it rides on the bearing. If you resurface that torsion arm, then you need undersize ID bearings and/or bushings.
You may find it better to locate another whole beam, and check it for non-worn arms and bearings first.
Also, squares are said to have a larger upper torsion bar (sway bar) than the earlies.
Mine were somewhat worn, but I repacked them and it works silently, without play, and smoothly. I have a second beam I plan to refurbish; hopefully it has intact bearings and arms!
I smoothed them with emery cloth, filed off any high spots/ridges, then reinstalled them. |

I have a very nice 70 beam with no external damage and is real smooth and tight as a fishes ass. even tapping the arms sideways with a mallet doesn't yield any movement.
came form a 70 notch that was last on the road in 1980. |

I have been keeping my eye open for a good beam to replace the worn out one in my notch. I think that will be a great time to do the Empi wide 5 mod too. As Adriel said, the re-install is gonna be the hard part. _________________ Jim in Sacto -

OK, I got a problem. The ID of these NOS phenolics are too small for the OD of the trailing link. |
on type 1 and 2, the bushings are reamed after installation. never did a type 3, but i would presume they would need to be reamed too.

after much concern about the viability of my stashed beam which I assumed to be in excellent condition I went and checked.
after 15min of thumping with a block of wood. It was so tight!
another 10 min later.
where are these bakelite bushes? deeper inside where its all slippery?
(hell yes! lol I'm so dirty)
Wow no wonder this beam was so appealing to keep. came of a 70 notch which was off the road and not touched since 1980. was practically nothing left of the body. All rust and a 1 foot waterline inside the cabin lol.
Anyway looks like these were a well worth investment.
my new solid bump stop holders. Machined out of 52mm bar stock.

I think the "bakelight bushings" is the frame that is holding your needle bearings in place? _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts
