Underneath the warm air control flap on my air cleaner there is a connection for a hose which i would assume should pick up hot air to stop carb icing, question is does the hose connect to anything under the tinware or does it just hang there

There was a special piece of tin that attaches to the bottom of the 1/2 cylinder tin, to which your hose connects. The hose goes through the rear tin and connects to this special piece, which picks up hot air coming off the cylinders.

There is another piece, often called a stove pipe, that works in conjunction with that piece. Also, the year of your bus will determine whether that pre-heat tube goes to 1-2cylinders, 3-4 cylinders, or to the 1-2 heater box at the front of the forward engine tin. What year is your bus?

Trying to find a pic of the stove pipe, no luck so far.

There are several varieties. Note the last one - the preheat goes through the front tin to a connection on the Heater box!

there are different pipes, depending on the side it goes on.
also, the tins are different between 40hp and 1500/1600. they differ in width.

Right pre-heat pipe (on a '67 beetle). ^^^^
This was also used 66 and early 67 buses.
You must use the straight down breather from the gen stand, the crooked one will not fit with the under tin unless you use the later style right little tin.

If you don't have those tins or pipes, you can just do this:

The pipes and small tins fit 40hp and 1600.
It is the breast tin that has different widths for 40hp and 1500/1600.

Thanks for this thread. I was just wondering why VW put the Oil Bath on the same side as the battery. Mine is completely in the way when trying to access the cables and batt. Then again I'm going to check and see if the correct mount is being used.

I think they moved it based on the gas heater being on the left side sometimes. EB

In the middle picture that ///Mink posted I wonder why the '66 carb is sitting so much higher than in the first picture of the '65 style.

It isnt sitting higher, the oil bath is at a different height. Match up oil bath bottom to fan housing and youll see

Could the governer equipped buses have a slightly higher mount but the pre production model in the brochure still has the lower tab sticking out of the engine compartment roof?
