| What's the word on these STD type 4 main bearings. I've read alot of forums but most of the posts are older. I found some in stock and need to make a decision. WHAT DO THE PRO'S SAY? |

A few people on [shoptalk forums] have checked a few sets out and found
the O.D. & I.D to be within specs.
The only supplier I know of is www.lowbugget.com
Do you have a supplier that can confirm the bearing spec's ?
i'm also looking for standard/standard mains.
And 10/10's

I installed Silverline's in my rebuild last fall. Put around 2,500 miles on the rebuild and so far they seem like their doing the job. 2.0 and they were std/std. They were purchased a few years back down in the Bloomington, IN area by a fellow samba member.
What's the price on them these days? Mine have a $36.50 price tag on the box! I doubt their nowhere near that now. _________________ ...make good money five dollars a day...

| They were $89.95 online or $99.95 over the phone. If they prove to be good quality that beats $250.00. Did you have to do anything special when you installed them. |

Germansupply has REPCO brand listed on the site as of today. Listed as IN STOCK for $83.
I dont know a thing about REPCO, but if Scott is selling them, you know they are good. |

No, nothing special.
Glad to hear they may be a couple options for all of us! Hopefully Scott does have those in stock, too. I'm not familiar with that brand. _________________ ...make good money five dollars a day...

Poptop,
I just ordered a set of Silverline steel back stnd/stnd mains for my type4 from EMW for $90 plus shipping. I was told that Silverline in Mexico is going to start making them again. Next shipment may not be for a few months. Who knows.
I was also told there have not been any complaints as to the quality. I will have them mic'd for tolerances when I get them. I guess I'll see.
Poptop, are you still complaint and problem free as to your bearings in your rebuild?? Hope so.

Jack,
that's good news, I hope, for type 4 rebuilders!
I have no complaints at this point. I dont have my bus on the road, quite yet, this spring, but did put 2,500+- miles on the rebuilder last October. Everything seemed great.
Good luck,

Just got the news from RIMCO aobut what bearings I need to find. I have access to a set of Metal Leve main bearings. Should I keep looking or are these acceptable for a driver that does not hotrod or lug his engine? I just need some input as I dont want to be doing this again in 2, 000 miles. Thanks for your thoughts.

I bought 2 sets a few weeks ago.(silverline) 1 set standard & 1 set 0.25 so i could check them against set's of Kolbenschmidts.
Both the I.D. & O.D. on the standards were right on.
as were the the other set.
They are steel backed bearings
Some have said because the center mains(saddle) are stamped rather than inked with the part# they must be distorted but, Even V.W. and Kolben did it the same way.
Also dowel pin holes are exact.
I will use them.and keep my german sets awhile longer. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

Is there a difference between "align bored" bearings and otherwise oversized bearings like .020"? I have looked for bearings and have been told by a couple of dealers they dont deal in align bored bearings. Thanks.

Not that they are aware of. Actually they have no idea who makes them, but it is not Mahle/Cleavite. |

He is correct! I received 2 sets of them yesterday. They are Mahle made in Brazil. Part number VW021.198.481ABR. I had a coupon so I ordered 2 sets when I saw the post. I can take pics if needed.
And you are correct Randy. They have no idea who makes them, only who distributes them. On the distributor's website they list Mahle as a brand they carry. _________________ 70 Deluxe, 78 Westy |

Correct. I should have if that was all they have, but I was too excited/skeptical. That was all that they listed in the catalog. _________________ 70 Deluxe, 78 Westy |

Hey guys; looking at buying some main bearings for my engine. Pretty much all that is out there at the moment in standard size is Silverline (Mexico) and Mahle (Brazil). The difference is that the Silverlines have steel backed center main as the originals did, and the Mahle's have an aluminum center main. I hope to pull the trigger and place my order today. Any thoughts or input on these or other bearings? I'd love to find some Kolbenshmidt's but no luck in this Main Bearing depressed market. _________________ *****************

| According to an article in the August, 2011 issue of DB&HVW's. Titled Tech tips with Gary Berg, Silverline bearings are the way to go. Just thought you might want to know. |
