Now that I am nearing the completion of my 20 month project, I thought I'd put some pictures up. I first saw this 1965 Westy hardtop at Volksfest in Pataskala, Ohio in August of 2009.

I then saw it for sale here on the Samba 2 months later. A deal was made and we went and picked it up.

It was originally from Texas and did not appear to have been on the road in more than 20 years. It was very solid with only a couple of tiny rust thru holes in the passenger side floor and a few in the cargo area. No rust thru on the body.

I spent the next year gathering some parts that were missing. I ended up buying a 66 Westy for the jumpseat & icebox. I then started looking for somebody to paint it. A buddy from high school finally agreed to do it. Here it is in primer.

After a road trip to the fall OCTO show, I picked up the bus in early November. Color is the original Pearl White.

I then started to put it all back together.

This forum was the greatest help. I read about sound deadning and the correct plywood replacement panels and flooring.

There was also a great thread on rebuilding the windows. What a pain that was but they turned out great.

I also learned how to get the puckered trim to look like new.

I got the engine rebuilt last year and it should be good now for another 100,000 miles!

I put in a new wiring harness while everything was apart and have a few bugs to work out. Can't get my turn signals and emergency flashers to work yet. All new brakes, shocks, tie rods, drag link, and radial tires should make it stop and go like new. I've put about 15 miles on it in the past week. Gonna have to take the engine back out so I can get the tank out and replace the sending unit. Should have thought about testing that before now.

It still has a Texas inspection sticker from 1976 in the window. The interior is now complete, except for new curtains and I'm gonna get them ordered soon. My wife & I are anxious to go camping along with our 5 year old grandson. Many thanks to all of you for all of the great information posted in this forum.

Sharp looking bus. I feel your pain on the engine R&R. I didn't discover the neck of my cheapass repro tank was cracked until after I installed the engine and filled the tank.

Looks good. Brings back a lot of memories. Been there and done that with an SO-42. Own two of them; well I did, one of them just got sold.

Thanks for all of your compliments. I know that I enjoyed reading about the progress of others and it often gave me an incentive to continue when I would get stuck on something. Now I have a question. Just got the wipers installed and I notice that other buses have both arms pointing to the passenger side. What did I do wrong?

Beautiful resto. Nice to see a CORRECT engine/exhaust restoration, too.
Would even be nicer if you installed the correct governor. I found a mint
one (with the safety wire and logo'ed VW lead lock) for my '66 and get a
lot of comments at shows about it.

Linda, its the Marmoleum by Forbo that Major Woody posted about. The pattern name is Libretto, I had to order it and the shipping was almost as much as the piece of flooring.

One step closer to being finished. I got the new curtains in and they are a perfect match to the old one, which is laying on top of the icebox. I'm getting new mustard yellow seat covers made and then I think its about finished, at least on the interior.

Very nice. Where did you get your curtains? It looks great.

Did you get your signals resolved? I had to run separate grounds to mine and it fixed the problem. 20 months is a pretty quick resto in relation to mine!

I got them from a lady in England, she advertises here on the Samba under the name Dolly Daydream.

I still haven't got the turn signal issue sorted out, but at the present time I've got the engine out (again) waiting on a 6 volt generator. They seem to be as rare as hen's teeth and I have been giving serious thought to changing over to 12 volts. I know its only the end of June but I feel like summer is slipping away while my bus just sits in the garage. My wife even suggested we push it out into the backyard and "camp out" one night!
