Great job finding all this info. How are you coming long on finding parts?

I now have a complete set up. ill be posting pics I took comparing parts to stock manual parts, as well as documentation of the stamped and printed part numbers and other markings on the saxomat parts. If you go up in the thread to the last page, youll see all the pictures of the parts I bought from "House" to complete my setup.

Im searching for a specification (just as is member Bally) for the thickness of the sintered bronze starting clutch disc. NO luck so far.
Im hoping to find either a NOS sintered bronze starting clutch disc as well as a NOS 160mm gearshift clutch (yes not a typo - just a mere 160mm)
or if possible a company who can rebuild them for me.

Do you have a saxomat car or know someone with one? if so Id love pics!

There was a Black '60 sedan here locally in San Diego that is equipped with the Saxomat transmission. It was part of an auto collection in the early '80s owned by Carl "Peanut" Belcher.

The car was sold to Ross Metcalfe, a teacher at Patrick Henry High School in the mid-late '80s. The car had WhiteWall tires & a matching single wheel trailer. It was the first VW that I actually admired because of it's vintage look.

It then went on the be featured in the Flat 4 Vintage VW book in the early 90s

Hey Glenn,
I saw you post about this car before elswhere on the samba when researching it. any idea about the where abouts of that car now?

Im trying to find new clutch discs for mine, as I'd like to have back-ups/eventual replacements. Mine are fine for now though. I found the gearshift disc NOS for 40.00- kinda shocked, but cant find the centrifugal clutch disc. it is sintered bronze pucks, Im guessing Ill have to have it reprayed with bronze and machined to spec. trouble is I dont know what the spec is, ive posted everything in this thread and theres only a spec for the gearshift clutch. nothing but a part number for the centrifugal clutch.

It would be neat to see if I could find this black 60 and see about a test drive and taking video of it in action. Cant wait to have it in my car and drive it as I bet it makes the bug even more go-cart like!

No Saxomat here but I do drive an Autostick. I am familiar with saxomats because of the autostick site. I like the funky and rare. Great job on finding all this. Would you mind if i linked this to the guys in the Autostick site? I have one more question about the pic you sent of the car interior. If that is your car where did you find the seat material? My 68 had something very similar to that in it Platinum cloth it was called. I'd love to duplicate it.

yes gladly! please link this! are you talking about the vwar site? i was surprised to see that their sister site saxomat.de is all about NOTHING to do with the saxomat. it confuses people into thinking an auto stick is a saxomat and vise versa.

Do you know if the servo diaphragm is the same for saxomat and autostick? ever swapped one out and if so where did you buy the new diaphragm rubber from? mine is in good condition, but I want a spare just in case!

please post up any more infor you might find/have! thanks!!!

Actually I have changed out the servo diaphragm. I got it from evwparts.com the factory stuff is much better though so don't mess with it unless you have too. I'm pretty sure the new stuff is just the diaphragm from a brake can on a tractor trailer. It's much stiffer then the oem stuff. I used to work for a Porsche dealer and if i am not mistaken it's still available through the parts department. It's not cheap though LOL. The autostick and porsche sportmatic had a lot of similar parts.

http://www.sportomatic.org/

I am not sure they are still updating this site. but they made the sportmatic from 68 to 79 and unlike vw, porsche supports just about any model they ever made. it was the 911's and 914's that had them. As far as saying what year. just tell them what you are doing. Most of the parts and service guys are car nuts so they are more then willing to help. I had a crowd around my beetle ever day for a week when I first started driving it to work. ( leaving my Audi s4 at home) the Audi never even got a second look there.

does the autostick have a clutch plate in addition to the torque converter? if so what diameter is it? the gearshift clutch on my saxomat is 160mm with a 110 mm inner diameter. do you know how yours compares?

we do have a clutch plate as well as the torque converter. I've been told its a regular 40hp clutch disk. I'm thinking its a 180mm disc. I know it's small because they don't take hot rodding well LOL. they don't wear much in our cars though because the clutch is either in or out, nothing in between.

im curious as to the dimension for the autostick clutch as I found one listed as an automatic clutch on a european website.
