I am considering buying new, German running boards for my '70 sedan. I have seen that they come with either a 10mm, 18mm, or 32mm chrome strip. Does anyone know what came standard in '70?

The correct width for a '70 is 17mm. Consider the boards from Wolfsburgwest, they are better that the German ones currently offered. I picked up a set of "German" running boards from JBugs a couple years ago when I redid my '69. They were crap. Lousy fit, flimsy, and the covers didn't fit well. I ordered a new set from WW and they were perfect.

I replaced a set of WW boards with these last year and they are identical to the originals that came on the car new.

They are a little pricey but well worth it.

I like the polished aluminum running board look, no rubber mat. Anyone make a good version of that?

Alright spotco, I'll be more specific. If the "German" running boards are from Hubert Schlieckmann GMBH - KarosserieTeile, pass on them. This was the brand I bought that turned out to be junk. Maybe I got a bad set, but they weren't worth the price of shipping.
