Hi there,
My 912 came with a 1600cc Bug motor in it. I need help identifying the Type and year of it so I can exchange out the exhaust. Here are a couple photos. I'm hoping someone can tell from these pictures what I have in the car.

Looks like a mid to late '71 1600 Bug engine.

Those were dual-port, dual-relief engines that are a good basis for a reliable and built-up engine.

Cool, thanks. I guess that would make it a Type 1. Any suggestions on a good source for exhaust options? The one on there now hangs low to the right and I want one tucked up high on the left so it fits the 912 better.
thanks,
Dustin

your generator bearings and stuff run hot??? i see the tin holding generator to fan housing is off location 90 degrees and the cooling slot for generator is counter clockwise 90 degrees. just asking by looking at the picture.

To be honest I haven't driven the car much since I got it, so I'm not sure yet. I didn't realize anything was unusual about the setup since I haven't seen another engine to compare with. Something I'll need to look into it sounds like.

Thanks,
Dustin

Smile 73 T1 1600cc engine in there...if interior is stock.

Yes...the gen should be turned 90 degrees to the right.

912 engines are hard to find and if so...expensive.

Have in my store room a 912 dist that worked real nice in my VW bug at one time...nice advance curve.

Thanks, that might be something I'm interested in once I get the thing back on the road. I'm trying to figure out the generate is 90 degrees off issue. Are you saying the guy installed it backwards? How do I move it?

thanks,
Dustin

I believe they mean loosen the clamp holding it to the generator stand and rotate it 90 degrees to the right, terminals pointing away from the carb.

The backing plates will have to rotate too.

Very Happy The gen and fan housing has to be removed. Four 6 mm bolts need to be removed and turn the gen to the right one position and retighten the bolts.

Helps to remove the carb first. Disconnect the gas cable and move carb to the left hanging by the dist.

Pull the center dist wire from the coil and the two/three wires (remember which goes where).

Not sure if the air flappers and thermostat are still attached which is also easily disconnected.

Remember the oil cooler is inside to the left of center...be carefull in lifting off.

Tried to cover the basics if original (not sure of your area).

Over the yrs many things no overly important are removed.

Initially the bug was designed for world use as we know and many have been moved around as in your 912 to VW conversion.

Got it, thanks everyone!
Still need a recommendation for online sources to buy parts for the engine? Any recommendations?

I'd relocate your fuel filter to either after the tank outlet or by the transmission. You certainly don't want a fuel leak over top of your distributor.
