I have spent most of my time on Samba in the mechanical forums. Thanks to all the help I got I am now almost ready to pull the body so I can clean and paint frame and strip and prep body for paint. I have a 65 T1 Euro.

My plan is to use a stripper to remove most of the paint inside and out then send main body out for blasting. Hopefully keep the blasting cost down by doing most paint/rust removar (all surface) myself so I can spend more on the paint job.

I have a lot of questions and thanks to Samba most of them have been answered by reading the threads in this forum but I am sure I will be looking to the experts here for suggestions and help.

Today my question is about powder coating. I understand what it is but which parts do you folks suggest I get powder coated?

and

on some of the small chrome parts I definitely plan to get re-chromed but what about the bumpers? Should I just replace? Not sure if they are OG but they are in decent shape, no dents just a lot of surface rust on the backside and peeling and pitting on the front.

Sandblasting should be cheaper than paint remover and do a better job – faster
Power coating is just thick – it has no advantage over paint then clear
And
Remanufactured bumpers never look as good as a quality re-chrome- never
Although I bought the re-chrome and then painted the inside with urethane and clear in silver chrome

Powder coating has several advantages, such as it's resistance to solvents. That being said, unless you do it yourself, it can add up quick.

Maybe I need to learn something here !

Well the powder coat guys claim that - but they want business- I was thinking it is just thicker ??

I think it is just enamel paint.
Down here in the Phoenix the guys take a rod and take it apart then directly to the powder coat people- they sandblast then powder coat the parts and high gloss the frame goodies They do it within a day or so so no moisture on the metal to rust. – only costs about 1200 for all your pieces—
We had a rod run down there two months ago and I got to watch the whole process—big overn and hangers – I think the guy is actually making money !
I guess it is something to think about – but piece by piece can really be expensive.
Grandson and I have a 73 that we are doing – I might just do it that way.

Dont use stripper. Sand it off. If you have to use stripper, use it on flat areas where you can wipe off 100%. Stripper and soda blasting leave a film behind that will come back in a year or sooner and ruin your whole project.

I wouldn't worry about trying to strip it yourself if your going to have it blasted. It won't really save any time. They blasters they use take the paint down to metal in seconds.
But blasting is the way to go for a restoration no doubt. I'll never do another one without blasting. It gets every nook and cranny your fingers cant get to.

Powder coating is cool stuff also. Very durable and oil resistant.
If your going for a all out no money's no concern build, then powder coat all the suspension, gas tank, engine tin, ect.

Be sure to post pics of your build! Cool
