My September production '60 has one and has factory provisions for it. Perhaps it was an option and not standard equipment at that point for that year.

I think it's correct from 6 Aug. 1959 (VIN 2 528 668 - 1st Beetle of model year 1960)

Regarding the switch from 4 finger apron to 3 finger (which isn't mentioned in "Progressive refinements") I think I have narrowed it down somewhat thanks to owners posting pics and VIN's here on theSamba:

The latest record of 4 finger apron is on 2 768 67x, build date 10 Dec. 59 (submitted by Zekes’Low60 in the first page of this very thread)
Zekes'Low60 wrote:

Hard to see.....but it has 4.

The first record of 3 finger apron is on 2 781 xxx (submitted a couple of weeks ago by el fela, when he bumped the four year old thread 1960 Front Apron.

The other I don't recall. I could take note of chassis numbers and take some pictures, if anyone is interested. I tend to forget this kind of stuff, so PM me if you don't hear from me soon !

Felipe
According to this info one can approximate the change of front apron to mid December 59.

Pretty cool to have all that documentation. Do you happen to have the original window sticker? If so, can we have a closer look at it?

Heres one to add found it this summer. Asked the guy if he wanted to sell, and he said no. That was until a couple weeks ago when my dad wrote me, saying the guy was ready to sell.

Vin is 3960536 doesn't have original motor, but everything else is. Has a motor from a 64.

That’s too bad. I was curious to see when they changed the style of them. Earlier in this thread (page 6 halfway down) you can see where I made a recreation of one for mine.

I'm in the process of tracking the original family down. Might get lucky and they have some more documents. Judging by the way the couple kept documents my chances are better than usual.

Here is my 60 named Eve. She was built in December of 59. True unmolested car that was sitting in a barn for 30+ years!!! Still 36hp, still 6v, still have original non-synchro trans (updated with 67 synchro trans). Would like to rebuild the non-synchro and put back in. As original as she can be! It hurts me just looking or working on the car! Laughing Anyways enough ranting, here are some photos

Lovely car! Are those cloth seats or vinyl? They look to be in great shape.

I found a 1960 36hp engine that seems to be in good shape. I am going to clean it up and use it in my '60. I think I remember reading that the manifold for 1960 should be silver. I found that 'cast aluminum' Duplicolor engine enamel plus ceramic looks fairly close:

Am right about the manifold being silver, or mistaken?
