So my odometer was not working and it has been bugging me, so i figured it is time to fix something on my bus that is relatively cheap.

Step 1. Disconnect Battery

Step 2. Remove 4 screws that secure the Gauge Panel to the dash. (collect the 4 Fasteners and nut plates and set them aside)

Step 3. Disconnect speedo cable, ground cables, Oil pressure, blinkers, High beams, CAT, EGR, and any other cables that may prevent you from removing the gauge panel. Take a picture of where these wires went or refer to your Bentley when rewiring.

Step 4. Remove five 6mm screws that hold your cluster to your gauge panel.

Step 5. If you desire for whatever reason, you can reset the odometer back to zero by turning the post the odometer gear goes onto. I used a dremmel and reset it back to zero.

Step 6. Install odometer gear onto post. (If your old odometer gear is missing, visually inspect and look for it. These crack and fall apart and you should find the pieces to remove)

Step 7. Since you have made the effort to go this far, this is a good time to clean the whole cluster especially the glass, crusty gauge rings and tidy up your wiring.

Step 8. Follow steps in reverse

Hopefully this has been helpful. I do not advertise for this company but someone will ask I got mine from speedometergears.com. I emailed and asked for a odometer gear for a 75 bus.

It looks like this is a yes, but just confirming this method will also allow me to clean the inside of the gauge glass? Mine are all dusty in there somehow.

Yes when you remove the 5 screws and remove the cluster all that is left are the gauge rings and glass. I removed 30 odd years of funk off my glass

NOTE - keep an eye on those fastners for 4 the screws that hole the whole thing in place.
Just sayin'- they often fall in the wires or elsewhere and hard to find.

you leave out any mention of the heat levers. Do they need to be removed somehow before pulling the gauge cluster out? I am about to replace my speedometer and am curious....

the red and blue handles simply pull straight off on the later models. early models you remove little cubes on the ends of the handles and finagle the cluster assembly around them (try moving one up, the other down, so you can get the pair as skinny as possible)

How would you tell if your Odometer/Speedo isn't working or if its the cable running thru that box on the floor. I just bought a new cable to be rid of the mechanism. But I guess I should verify that the cable is working and or if the gears up top are busted.

Do NOT remove the ends of the levers! They will never reseat as successfully after you bend the 90* ends to clear the slots in the dash.

Be a man about, we all hate it, but you have to go under and one by one pull lever clear of the others and remove the retainer buttons on early buses, then pull off and note with horror the stupid @^!&*@ clips that fit in the slots (what were they thinking??) that will fall off.
Later early buses, '73 or so, have easier spring clips, get there and see how it's done.

On that page, do you mind me asking which of the gears they sell matched the one you were replacing? Mine just cracked so I need to buy one just like in your second speedo innards pic (the small 11-tooth one)...but with all of their "collar" talk they have me really confused. I take it that I want the 8.65mm "VW11" gear available from the first block on the page?

Thanks in advance!

- Doug
