So how do people get the propane tank filled on their campers? Most places require the grill tanks to be filled behind a cage, etc. Will some place like Ace Hardware run a hose to my bus if it's close enough? _________________ 1977 Sage Green Deluxe Campmobile - "Turtel"

Any gas station with a propane tank will fill it. Just be sure to open the vent befire filling. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Some people report having problems at gas stations with knuckleheads. Best to find one place that can handle it and give them your business everytime you fill up any tank. GL _________________ 78 Riviera

My adventurewagen is filled without question as all the pumpers fill the big RV's here and are used to the system- the bigger 5 on the roof of the split is a "Lay down design" which really can be filled from laying flat. It can either be taken down from the rack (if you don't bolt it down) and filled standing up or laying down as the vent tube is gone inside the tank.
Knuckle heads???? You can't fix stupid. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

Are the upper and lower rear shock bolts the same diameter (12mm).
I could have sworn the upper was larger when I replaced my shocks a few weeks ago. I've searched and it looks like they are the same, but I dunno... |
Some shock rubber end mounts had a steel sleeve inside which would rust to the bolt and make it look over sized- hit it with a big chisel length wise and it would usually brake loose- OR remove the sleeve from the new shock and bolt it to the old sleeve. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. I am having some trouble finding a transmission rebuild kit for my 70 bay. Does anyone know of a company that sells everything together? |

There's a few, but they all come already installed in the rebuilt transmission. Nobody can predict what parts you will need or the sizes of shims you'll require, if they did offer a "every part you may possibly need" kit it'd cost more than a rebuild by an experienced shop. You are aware there are some pricey special tools and training involved to work on a VW transaxle, right? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Hmm I didnt know that. i thought it was a pretty standard rebuild. It doesnt NEED a rebuild, I was just gonna do it.. but if its not like other rebuilds I might pass. I Know it needs a new input shaft bearing at the least.. |

Wolfsburg West listed them as "in stock" a few days ago. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Stupid question number one.. I think the Tranny on my 1978 bay window 2.0 fuel injected bus is going out. I found a guy selling a automatic transmission for a late bay window for just $50. Would this conversion be pretty difficult?? |

the gear selector and throttle linkages will be the major issue. it's possible but far, far from a bolt-in swap. easy answer is it's too much work to be worth the effort but that's subjective. how badly do you want an automatic or are you just being frugal (cheap). the automatic linkages, mounts, gear lever etc. will not be easy to put together unless you have a complete donor automatic vehicle with everything available. _________________ SL |

Can a type 4 case be welded? Specifically the part of the case where the lower case bolt runs through the oil sump and threads into the other side of the case (picture for reference). Will the case need to be aligned bored after the welding?

I believe that I remember seeing and reading about just such a proceedure here on the samba. I believe that the poster was chrisradioman. I don't recall if the post was on his current bus "Milly", or his previous bus. Can't find the post, but I will keep looking. _________________ 77 Westy named Tiki - Daily Driver 80 miles a day!

On the T4 case:
That's the little hidden 8mm bolt, isn't it? I'm guessing you missed it and tried to pull the case apart with it still there?
It can be welded, yes, but you're going to want to take it to a machine shop that is comfortable TIG welding and machining aluminum. From what I've read, MIG is a real dirty PITA on aluminum.
I don't see why it would need to be line bored though, welding aluminum requires a lot of heat, but I can't imagine it would warp the case. All you would need to do to ensure it lines up is to put the case together with a few nuts/bolts before you drill the new hole, no?
Another possibility is using an insert, like a heli-coil, but you'd have to make sure you have enough material to do so. I believe that bolt is an M8x72, and the Heli-coil hole size for the 8mm-1.25 insert is 8.3mm. _________________ Jimmy

Hi Guys,
I don't kwon if this qualifies as an stupid question, but I had been working on my 1970 Westy for the last few years buying her back on the road again.
I replacecet all the steering components including a trbuilt steering box.
I notice that when I turn the steering well all the way to the left the inside of the right tire tuch the Stabilizer bar. So what I did wrong ?
Miss alignment the steering box with the peg or Drag link adjustment?
Thanks for the help!! |

There is a very certain order that our front steering assemblies go together in. It's outlined in detail in your service manual, but the basics are:
1- Center the steering box, ignore the steering wheel.
2- Center the center pin (with the drag link.)
3- Center the tires with the one adjustable tie rod.
4- Pull the steering wheel and center it.
Again, the service manual will be more detailed, but I think those are the basic steps, and you ALWAYS start with a centered box and END with the steering wheel.
My guess- one of two things:
- Drag link was adjusted too long, and now your straight tracking is actually a "right turn" according to the box which is not centered.
- Someone installed a second adjustable tie rod, so they could bypass steps 1 and 2 above and just use the tie rods to center the road wheels. This is WRONG, and partly why VW did NOT equip these cars with two adjustable tie rods.
Let us know if going through your linkage by the book doesn't help.

If it still rubs after you set up the steering per the manual. You may need to adjust your Steering Stops.
