the filler tube gasket. I replaced the dipstick boot and that's still holding up - for now.
I do have another spare one of those at least as I had heard from others they don't last as long.
is there a special search term im missing or does nobody actually carry that filler tube gasket? |
Silicone works well and will last longer than any engine you rebuild. Just don't gob too much on there as with time the excess will end up in the oil pickup screen. |

Sorry I got confused your not talking about the grommet that seals the filler tube to the coolin tin, your looking or the gasket between filler and case? This part should be available. I bought one last year. _________________ Special Thanks to:

What are those trim clips called like on the slider door? They go all the way through and have a shiny metal top on them like a stud. Also can that sort of things still be purchased? If so I'm willing to do all the measuring to get the holes for trim pieces in the right place to use them.
So close to finishing now and I kind of don't want to drill holes for screws if I can clip panels in. Going to make them from that 3mm ply because it's only like $19 / sheet. Missing the bottom half of the slider panel, the one next to the back seat, the one between the C/D pillar (although there is no obvious way of attaching anything) and the back hatch panel. Some of these never even existed. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Expensive: http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=221867615A , you may be better off finding something here (possibly plastic) and sourcing them locally. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My bus is a '79 and the numbers on the fan case and oil breather are the same, GE039000. From that it tells me my engine is a '79. I got that down.
What I don't get is that my exhaust system doesn't look like that off a '79 and when I went to get new gaskets for the muffler I had to buy 72-74 gaskets. It's 2 different spots entering the Muffler and one exit at the tailpipe on the passenger side of the engine. Is this something that some '79 engines had or do I have a wrong/mixed exhaust system? _________________ 1979 Westy |

Sounds like a 79 system to me, the ports at the heads will be the final answer, own a camera? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6 _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Sounds right for a Federal '79, while the Cali '79 was a hybrid. |

This is super stupid and I think I'll get a better response here.
Where can I find an engine number that's at a different location than the shroud?
My shroud is not original to my engine, and I want to know what the engine is out of.
It is a type 4, with the original oil dipstick location on the top sorta by the AAR. Probably Porsche or maybe Vanagon?
Can I see the engine number without pulling a bunch of crap off of it? _________________ -Tony

The block is stamped right at the base of the breather tower. You have to stick your head in the engine compartment and kind of look behind the fan shroud to see them. |

Dudes, does the ballast resistor and / or double relay need to be metal to metal grounded to the firewall or just the brown wire on the fuel pump harness only?
I want to fasten these units to the firewall without screws. _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion
