Hi guys, this is my first post and hope some of you knowledgeable chaps can help me out with my clutch issue. Im a novice at this but getting there. I have a 64 split and recently, when pressing the clutch pedal down i get a howling/ grinding noise, but also the engine revs drop sometimes to a stall whilst idleing, for eg when going from ntrl to 1st gear.whilst driving normaly its fine and no probs selecting gears. its only when i come to a stop and the clutch pedal is pressed. im guessing thst the clutch return bearing needs replacing but would this account for the revs dropping? or could this be something like having the wrong type of bearing (Early/Late). Anyway i have a vaccation booked for next week could i do any serious damage if i use it? |

One of the best ways to check for proper clutch dis-engagement is to idle you engine with the trans in neutral and the clutch pedal let out. Then, press the clutch pedal down to the floor, count to three and select reverse gear.
If the clutch dis-engages properly, it will go into gear without any grinding. That means the clutch disc is free on the input shaft splines, the pilot bearing (gland-nut) is spinning freely, and the clutch is releasing far enough.
If you are only getting a noise with the clutch depressed, especially if it starts with only light pedal pressure, you most likely have a throw-out bearing problem. If it is bad enough (like gone) this can put more of a strain on the engine and lower the rpms. If it is stalling, well...that's not good. Time for a clutch.

| Yep it only starts when the clutch peddle depressed and only lightly pressed at that. So new clutch kit is probably the answer then. Itl still have to be after my hols tho. luckily not going far! Cheers Gordo. |

Do not drive it until it has been inspected. Period. _________________
