the bus was lying flat on its rear part, engine and trans were pirated long ago, rear bumper was missing accordingly. in the rear sombody tried to lift the bus in the middle of the rear apron and only stopped when it and the decklid were damaged beyond repair. later lights were cut into the rear corner, it originally had the small taillights (early 61). while trying to lift the body with a forklift it was dicovered the hard way that there were a lot of sacks of concrete cement inside Shocked
so parts of the chassis were damaged too Embarassed

this is how i first saw it - it was about to be scrapped. i felt sorry for it, i just cant stand the thought of a split being extinguished. since i only paid a very moderate amount of cash for it (just what the few usable parts on it were worth) i thought what the heck - i just cant live without a split (i just sold my 65 21-window the week before)
stay tuned

You are going to restore it? That is going to take a lot of grunt work.

yes, i am going to restore it.
i do have a faint clue of what is involved with a resto like that. i have turned this:

into this:

i also restored an ovalwindow ragtop
both cars were multiple show winners at local VW shows and have been featured in german magazines

as for why i sold the deluxe (and i am in the process of selling the oval too): i discovered i am more a tinkerer and not a driver. i have owned the oval since 1988 and the deluxe since 1986, after the long years of restoring these i just did not drive them for various reasons, mostly time (i have the time to work on my cars at night) and the weather not permitting driving a full resto on the street half of the year where i live. rain on my perfectly restored underbody? no way Rolling Eyes . after building the oval i did eight engines for it between 1.6 and 2.7 liters - not much driving them either, just a race or two. besides - the money was good Cool
the panel will recive the attention normally only a barndoor would get (as of now, but just wait a few years)
oh yes, i do ALL the work myself in my garage, excluding paint or the casual transmission work.

"nothing is too far gone" is my motto also. you just have to cut a little more Very Happy
if you see the bus on the pics and think it is bad, you are wrong - its real bad. its basically going to need close to everything repaired sheet metal wise
just an idea how this thing looks:

i started to disassemble what was left of removable parts
someone needed the handbrake assembly in the past, so he removed it with a cutoff wheel:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

first on the agenda was repairing the framerails on the right side, these were damadged by the forklift and i had the fear of the whole car getting out of alignment. i will remove the floor of the loading compartment later, but now i still need it for structural strenght. i cut a slit from above to get to all the places i have to weld

it is tiring for sure, but doing one thing at a time and teaking breaks helps.
very nice work on your deluxe stephen, amazing speed, thats just not my thing, i like to go slow, so also funds for the project are better kept under control
but i like to play around Very Happy

only non stock items on the panel will be the suspension and engine. i will use a 68 balljoint beam with adjusters and a T2 IRS setup in the rear. only permanent mod is the inner mount of the IRS, but everything else is reversible. i have done the same to my deluxe and was very impressed with the ride quality. brakes will be stock T2 drums all around, but with a later brake booster, all tried components that are all bolt on.

As it should be obvious, I like your thinking! Cool

I like your motto "Nothing is too far gone".

I would rather be a driver than a tinkler (that just does not sound right).

Her in Florida, USA we can drive all year round.

I will be watching this build.
It is amazing to me to watch some of the crusty rusty Barndoor builds.
As the years go by, we will most likely see more crusty rusty splits being saved than those being cut up.

Very cool!
How's about you just get this one nice and solid, and have fun driving it. I couldn't drive a restored bus around, either. Too nerve-racking!

Good bus karma to you!
