Nice attention to detail, the car looks great! I'm working on dyno matting my car right now, how thick was the mat you used in the doors and quarters? I bought some (not Dynomat) off an ebay seller but it's really thin. Would you happen to have the link of where you ordered yours from?

And please do not cut that car into a baja!!! I'd love to find one that nice here in the rust belt Smile

Good to see you have the deck lid fitted to sit flush again. That bothered me in an earlier pic. And cool you reverted the side mirror. I know it's just an opinion but I enjoy your approach to the project. Nice work.

I looked it up for you, it's 1.7mm thick (Dynamat Extreme). I'll PM you the details right now. Baja is still 50/50. It would be nice to have a clean and straight Baja but it would hurt to cut her as well...

Thanks a lot! It's a great project to work on, and a blast to drive. I wish I had installed the hood spring and took off the decklid extenders much earlier but oh well, I appreciate a lot more now Laughing .

Time for some tune up!

Today I put in my NGK 4210 B5HS non-resistor spark plugs in. I talked to Air Cooled Engineering about spark plug options and they recommended these over the other choices. I'm surprised I didn't do this right when I bought her. Shocked

Bosch Platinums were in there when I bought her.

After installing (with dialectric grease) and torqued to 25 ft/lb I drover her around and was surprised with how much easier she starts! Engine decel is also much smoother.

Before the new plugs I calculated my mileage to be 25MPG, so we shall see if the new plugs get me some better mileage.

I have more updates from before the shifter bushing etc but thats a little more of a write up and I have HW to do now. Crying or Very sad

If you put drop spindles on this car, the exhaust will actually be higher. Then it might not rub. I like the wheels, Laughing but I'm not a big fan of the running boards. Crying or Very sad A narrowed beam with adjusters would do the same thing as drop spindles, but would move the front wheels inside the fenders.

Well after having tons of fun driving her around as my DD, I decided to give her some jewelry to keep her happy with me. I found a great deal on Bug Pack aluminum bolt on valve covers on the bay so I decided to purchase them.

I got the new valve covers and the install kit shipped for ~$60!

I never really liked the snap on valve covers, so i've been looking for a nice set of bolt ons for awhile now. My local VW shop (B&R Buggies) recommended these covers as they have the correcct clearances for high ratio rocker arms, something I may be mor einterested in later. Despite the lack of an install kit, the install went very smoothly. Once you pop off your valve covers you can easily see what must be done. I used lock tight for every threaded part on the install kit to ensure those beauties stay on.

While I was in there I adjusted my valves for the second time (Also made sure TDC was where I thought it was). After the adjustment I have no more backfire poping issues, which is sure nice Cool

So far i've put 2,218 miles on her in a little over a year. I'll probably decrease my valve adjustment intervals to 2K after the improvement I felt after this last one. Now it's time for an oil change, an air filter cleaning, and checking my timing.

Long story short: I've been working on this thing every chance I get (which isn't too often with school, work, and other hobbies). However, I think everyone will be pretty happy with my updates. I have a ton of pics, tales, and cool mods that I need to post. I can't wait to finish it! Very Happy Very Happy

Merry Chirstmas everyone! Very Happy While waiting for family to arrive I thought i'd start to post up some pics...

Well lets see here... Where to start? Shocked

I forgot to post a new item (to me atleast) I bought before dissambling the bug.. a roof rack!

I have been seeing them all over the place, and could only find used ones for $150 or new ones for $300... So when I saw one for $80 on CL I jumped on it! Granted I had some work cut out for me...

The cool look I was going for:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

What they look like new:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

What the ad showed:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And what I ended up with:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I quickly realized there was no installing this rack on my bug for the drive home... The nuts (all four!!!!) for the rack mount were rust-seized to the threads with absolutely no budging with the wrench...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So, after trying to somehow fit my new rack into the bug through the doors etc for a solid 20 minutes, rotating that rack every which way one could imagine.... I set it on my roof, rolled down my driver window, and held her down on the ride home.

Leaving pepboys (where I met the guy who sold it to me)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And arriving home:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Side note: driving the bug one handed, while holding that rack down with all of your might on the freeway was not easy! Every little bump the rack would slide back 1/4" LOL!

I soon began to work on the rack... Drilling out the wood rivets, and beginning to sand the metal down.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

After trying more, with heat this time, the rack mounts just broke in half on the threads... Time for new ones!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

After sanding a little bit, I called it a day and put the rack in the garage for the time being. Remember this was all prior to me putting her on the jackstands etc...

The next craigslist ad I found was for some VW pop-outs. The guy lived in Nevada, and told me he found them in his neihbors shed (he passed away?). He was asking $90 (plus shipping to CA of course), so I figured 'what the hey', even if they were scraped up I would still have pop-outs!

So I pay-pal'd the guy the $90 and had him take the windows to the UPS store to have them ship them to me... UPS is VERY proud of their work/boxes/bubblewrap/packing peanuts! $30 later, my windows were on their way!

Heres the ad I saw:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And what I ended up with!:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

These things were MINT! Some NICE VW brand pop-outs! WAY cleaner/crystal than my stockers, and the hinges/latches/trim/ and mounts were all in great shape! I called the guy again and told him thanks once more.

I did have to buy the mounting kit from Wolfsburg, and while I was there I ordered all the seals (body seal, and window seal), latches, latch covers, and stainless hardware kit.

Which came in a nice medium wolfsburg west box, that Opal loves to model with Very Happy

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

At this point I was very stoked with both my CL finds, two items I've wanted ever since buying the bug! This pretty much brings us up to speed with when I put the bug on jack stands. More updates to come Cool

Pretty funny, I'm in Nevada and almost bought those same popouts for my build but procrastinated on it a little bit too long.

Great deal and nice build. Good Luck.

Haha that is funny! Thanks man Cool

Some little teasers until I have some more time to post up the details:

Opal was very happy to see the Airkewld 4" narrowed beam come in... (I was too Shocked Very Happy )

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I ended up buying the maximum lowered shocks through Airkewld, and their Complete Ultimate beam kit. I soon realized why many buy pre-dimpled torsion bars, as well as narrowed tie-rods.

I then invested in some POR15 goodies! Por15 black paint, metal etcher, gas tank restoring setup, and marine clean.

Around this point I opted for the EMPI 2 & 1/2" drop spindles after creating a thread discussing the pros and cons.

Heres a few parts after the etcher:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then began the paint process... I HIGHLY recommend wearing gloves while painting with this stuff... it is VERY hard to get off your hands without using sand paper. Rolling Eyes

Some fill-in updates...

One of MANY more orders to be made:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Headlight rings, break drums (rear), and pop out window seals, hinges, and screw kit, as well as front indicator light seals Very Happy

My 6" Custom Dished wide 5 rims:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I went with the wide 5 as I love the look of the 'Smoothies'. One day i'll go wide 5 up front too...

I guess I didn't take any pics of my front rims... But a friend and I drove to Lake Elsinore to a HUGE VW junkyard to find some stock 4 lug front rims. I ended up picking 2 15" x 4.5" wide rims, for $50:).

After the POR15 process, some pics of my beam, spindles, and trailing arms all painted up:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The paint crept through my masking tape on the snouts, but that buffed off prior to rotor install.

While working on her, I got a little too excited and began the pop out window install...

Old rubbers:
Passenger side
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Driver side
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Ready to be replaced:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here's my friend being a buddy and wire wheelin' the passenger side grudge/paint/slime/paint/debris/paint, and some more paint layers off the inner fender wall. I spent a solid 4 hours doing the driver side the week prior, so we negotiated a labor trade: Wire wheel the bug and i'd replace the window regulator in his explorer Cool (Knew how to it from when my F150's went out)
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Heres a great picture showing what we were in for... a LOT of wire wheeling!
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The bug stayed at this point for awhile while I was in school, working, and taking care of other hobbies that needed my immediate attention (dirtbike top end, truck maintenance)

THEN! I caught the 'bug' again (had to...) and began to go ape-sh*t on the wire wheeling...

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

To say that wire-wheeling the bug for many of hours was fun would be lie. But as the rust, paint, oils, paint, and some more paint slowly got peeled off and the metal began to show, excitement came over me and made it much more fun to finish it. Laughing

After the end of it there was a solid 2" of loose debris sitting on the driveway, which you can see a little of in that last pic Shocked

Progress was being made Shocked Cool
