Votes still out on the "Lord Fusor 127". Seems to do the trick. I just hope the advice that was given to me locally on the product works ok. I'm sure it will be fine. Its a little messy.
I did have an issue on the rear. Against advice, Embarassed, I primed between the Fusor (on top) and the filler. Not sure what happened but the filler didnt stick. Blew off off in one large sheet after sanding, leaving the primer coat.
The advice I was given, grind the Fusor rough, 40-80 grit, DONT PRIME, and then lay the filler on directly. The redo seems to be working fine. If it doesnt, plan 3 will be to lay resin and glass directly on the Fusor. That should make the transision. So far it doesnt seem Ill have to though. Note I didn't prime the Fusor on the hood, just roughed it up, skimed the filler and its holding nicely.

Overall It's lookin' good.

For those interested, in the questions and process. flyboat has some good insight.

If the Fuzor is similar to teh product we use, nothing will stick to it. You will want to take it all off except for what is between the two mating surfaces. Basically, you don't want any of the adhesive visible. The gel coat on teh fiberglass takes body filler very well if it is ground to 40-80 grit. If you have trouble, use a sharp tool and dig out all the adhesive that is between the rear window opening and the fiberglass panel. Sand down in the crack good and apply body filler. It should be ok after that.

, nothing will stick to it.

Well, we'll see. At least I know it sticks to fiberglass and steel.
I guess Ill find out after its rolling and flexing.

Confused
Not saying its right but, with advice from my local goto body guru that uses the Fusor 127, body filler WILL stick to the Fusor, as long as the top smooth skin layer is removed and roughed with 40-80 grit and cleaned. That cant be said for other and all Fusor products. So far it has worked just fine and is holding nicely. Fingers are crossed and time will tell. Unfortunatly I cant remove the Fusor from the window surround opening, as its helping hold the split window in place. It was a big gap to fill with the Fusor.
I'll keep an eye on it, and hope for the best. Worst case if it doesnt work out, in the long run, Ill move toward another solution. Trial and error, live and learn.

Mile post 163..

Chopped down the vent wings for the 67 doors. They came out pretty decent.
Rear split window insert is done..... Arrow Laughing for now.
Shot coat of primer on the roof to make it one color. Sweet...
Pulled the front beam to give it a once over.
Reshimmed the Link Pins, and steam cleaned the beam.
Turned the drums, repacked the bearings, new front cylinders, and shoes.
Welded the steering shaft to the adpater tube.
More sanding. Just about to the point of "F" it... and roll. Its wont be pretty, not supposed to be, but its fun.

Working on a short list of parts to buy.

Pulled the front wheels, ditched the tires, primed and painted rims, 2 new Nexen's 165/80/15.
HINT Check my ads for a deal on Nexen's.

Note the Dog Dish Corvair Caps. Wink
Really want to try and use them, but may have an issue brewing.
Using 66-67 style wheels where no not many do.....

Cleaned up primed and painted the rear wheels. 225/70/15 Kumho's
Picked up the re hoop'd 66-67 wheels a few years ago. Finally gonna use them on something.

Rainy weekend, not able to do much sanding... Hoooray Laughing

Moved on to some on the final welding I have put off for....a rainy day.
Built:
Front extended axle support
Additional headlight/hood/axle support
Drilled and pinned the front hood
Brackets to support Diamond Plate firewall

Pulled all the dash switches out
Painted the back of the dash, and painted under hood area.

Unfortunatly cant quite make the Corvair Caps work right now dang it! Still thinking on a plan of attack. My first attempt didnt go as planned. Trying not to ruin the caps or the wheel. Soooo Its gonna be some 66-67 VW flat caps for now.
Cleaned the shop...it was pretty bad..

No pics.... well ok just this one.

No pressure....... Geeezz....
Im working as much as I can on it on the weekends.
Should be ready enough to roll .. by May 19th.. but its gonna be close.
Lets hope the transaxle can handle the extra stress. Its all ready got beads of sweat on it.

New flags....? What was wrong with the old ones.
I see the Caddy got a freshen up. Tell Todd it's looking awesome as usual. Is Ophelia gonna be back up and runnin' ?

For those of you who are wondering what the hell we are talking about, my brother and I had a "brothers grudge" match last year at Steel in Motion. Now known as The "1967 Showdown". My 67 Blue Bomber against the 67 Cat... Mercury Cougar.

We had the priveledge of having OutlawAlice personally step in to drop the rags for us.

I had started the post below about if for fun, just to stir up the shit.
After WEEKS..... MONTHS, of trash talk from my bro, the Kitty licked its wounds all the way home and apparently choked on its own furr balls. Nice to beat an older brother. The quote of that day after the first race was....."Jesus H Christ that thing is quick"
I honestly thought it would be a little closer race. Maybe I shoulda left the generator belt on.... Twisted Evil But you know me.

I had to make new flags for the girls. It's a WHOLE different set up this year. We're getting coverge from three well known and reputable national magazines. Plus, us flag girls will be in full Pin Up girl staus. There will be photo shoots!

Ophelia will be up and running. I picked up a 1776 yesterday. Very Happy
I have to replace one cylinder, smooth out the combustion chamber in one head, (a tin screw had dropped into it and cracked the cylinder). I found an intake and Weber 32/36 to slap on it. She'll be there!

The caddy got a facelift since the hood pin broke last year two months after a 6 month down-to-bare-metal paint job. But she's not finished yet...MWAH HA HA HA!!!

It's gonna be MASSIVE this year. There are folks coming from as far away as Maryland.

Ya'll are staying for the whole thing and camping since we expanded it to be Friday thru Sunday?

Wow, sounds like a whole new level for Steel In Motion. I hope it doesnt loose that cool small feel, as it gets bigger.
3 magazines, I guess the pressure is on.....now.!
I'm not sure about the camping, but plan to be there most of the day at least on Saturday.
We're all lookin' forward to it.
Im bustin' knuckles trying to get Operation X rollin' by then.
Id like to drive it a while and make a few test runs before then just to see what it's got, and see if its gonna hold...

Yeah, it's that "new level" that has me spooked. I think this is it though. We won't allow it to go any larger.

So what's next on Operation X??

Good deal. Bigger isn't always better..

Umm Anxious What's next with Operation X...?
Lets see.......

A little more fill, a little more sanding, color....s, then my potential nightmare.......glass.
May be plastic wanna be glass at first. I can handle that. Ive yet to ask our local glass gal, about the thin VW size laminated glass. I know we can get the thick American stuff....
She said she should be able to cut down an old laminated windshield... I hope so.
Hopefull shoot the full color....s or what's supposed to be colors.. in 2 weeks.... Weather permitting.

Lots of old and used stuff. Wink

I had a deal on some pretty wild front seat covers, free just pay shipping, but.... I think that deal is delayed.... the deal was supposed to happen in January.... Confused Not sure whats happened ?
I got something...in storage that wiil work just fine.

I'm pretty much updating this post after every weekend, so just take a quick stroll

Trying to make Lemonade from Lemons, chicken salad from chicken sh..., well ya know.

The thought was to make use of left over cars and parts from several years of buying and selling, then build something, rather than just scrap it. Plus needed to clean up the back yard a little. Funny thing is now its more of a mess than it was when the cars were in one piece. Cool

The idea for Operation X has been rolling around in my head for a few years, just needed a little nudge to finally get er done. It will probably never be "done", always tinckering, can't sit still... ADHD.

I understand about the not being able to sit still. Laughing

What about lucite or thick plexiglass instead of glass? WAY more forgiving. The caddy windshield isn't glass. Thanks to the chop.

You got me thinkin...

I called my local glass gal Laura. She said she has 3/16 laminated glass.
Turns out thats just about what I need. She told me to make up some patterns out of cardboard, poster board, anything, bring it to her and she can cut it out, as long as its flat glass "No problem man".
She cut the glass for the "Gray Ghost", from old bullet laiden patterns. #2gunfire
For some reason I think those were thicker. Too long ago, too many miles.

She can also get just about any type and size Plexiglass or Lexan you need. Laura has taken over the business for her father Lamar, after many many years. Small town "Glass Gal". She knows her stuff and is good.

Well now. Todd mentioned having his re-cut. It got scratched during all the body work and he thinks a new piece could be cut to fit better. I'll tell him you know someone!

Go big or go home right?
If you know anyone with an extra Corvair Engine 1965 up, Id be interested. Just in case I scatter this one. Id hate to have to use a VW engine after all this work, but I guess I could.

Still looking for 61-64 door parts.
Looking for good door side window glass, and the vent wing divider bars to go along with the vent wings we traded for. Oh yeah what happend to the Erson rockers? Did they end up on the Wagon... Very Happy
I have now picked up just about everything else to bring my 62 ragtop doors back from 1 piece windows. That car is a ways down the road. Chassis, engine, etc is done, just need to work on a little body repair and shes ready for paint. Im not rushing that car. Ive had it a long time, its not going any where.

If you know anyone that might want to build a 65-67 Convertible Rat Rod, send em my way. Be sure they have thier Tetanus shots up to date.

Mile post 179

Saturday was a crap day. Rain again, so body work was out.
Sunday was decent until around 5 when the bottom fell out.

Got some of the final smoothing work done. Still pretty lumpy, that car was a mess, and I AM NOT very patient with final body work..
It had.....has crashed left front and left rear quarters, so for this ONE didnt really spend a bunch of time making those pretty. Just smooth...er. Cut Weld Drive... HAVE FUN.

BUT Very Happy
One of my last rainy day project was completed.
I made the flat 6 moster rear support.
It works perfect. I unbolted the bottom 2 engine bolts to test to make sure it split the engine and transaxle when cranked down ..... Eh? well cranked up, without bending.
Its OVER built, Sooo now no more worries.

Its basically a frame horn extension. Used 5 feet of 2x3 rectangular tube, from the engine rear to the chassis spine in front of the transaxle.

Welded a 16 inch rectangular cross just below the transaxle, and used 2 U bolts to make a leverage fulcrum. As the U bolts are cranked, the load is applied to the short end at the engine. Lots of leverage.... Simple. This would work great for a Buggy or Rail using a Corvair engine, needing a rear mount. or a tow bar....
Ground clearence is the downside, but the front beam will knock most things out of the way first. Next time Id use 1 x 3.
It would make changing oil a bitch, but i made it easy to remove. Wink

Rear mount simply bumps the rear engine extension/ tag mount I added.
1 urethane mount bolted to each part, the 2 rest against each other with no bolts. Not pretty.. just used what I had laying around.
