First optional half .. I've taken this year.
So... what to do..what to do..
#1 Cold Beer
#2 mow the weeds..
#3 Colder Beer
#4...cut down and add these lil' trumpet exhaust tips..
#5 Even colder beer and.. off to the hammock..
#6 repeat step 5..
#7.. drain and flush occasionally as required.
Man.. love the way this lil' buzzin' flat half dozen thumps and shakes the car..
It will be out in full force to and fro work tomorrow..

Well... finally getting back to some fine tuning..
I know I know... its been a while getting back to. About 3k miles...
The engine has had this irritating mid throttle cruise surge and light throttle hesitation...since I've had it on the road..
Ran fine at idle.. and at WOT....
It was very temp sensitive. Once the engine and temps are HOT.. like with ambient temps over 85, runs really well.
I had been semi chalking it up to what most Corvair owners complain about.. using the non heated 1x4 intake.
BUT,
After some research.. and some investigation... without installing an exhaust gas sensor.. and doing some old school plug reading.. I decided... its got to be mid throttle lean problem..
I bumped the mains up by 11 to a pair of "61's" I scrounged from an ole' 2 barrel Holley we've had laying around..
Changed the Power Valve to what Holley recommends based on vacuum readings.
Major improvement. and Shoulda done it sooner...
Engine picked up quite a bit of power, and is very smooth. Does seem a touch rich, especially as the throttle slams back shut..or very very light throttle.
It does have a slight issue with the vacuum advance grounding at max advance I can see it bouncing the Tach..... so need to look into that next..
Carb down.. note how clean inside..
Its from using quality fuel, 2 filters, and Marvel Mystery added to the tank each fueling..
(use good stuff people)
Anybody want to take a shot at what my carb return spring bracket is recycled from.. :

Just a guess, but seeing the uniform silver color from end to end, I'm guessing an antique wood handle slotted screwdriver (chopped) with a tiny hole drilled in the end. |

Not quite sure where you're looking to see that.. unless... the secondary venturis are probably not the best area to lay tools.. .. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Lil' Sunday morning tuning.. yes my... neighbors love me this I know, for the... lets just hold it right there....
Dwell was high (tight points), found the point coil circuit has frayed a little from dangling in the wind.. .. truthfully I knew it was an old original baked wire.... put it on the back burner way back.
Replaced distributor point wire, set dwell, timing, and carb yet again....
Seems to have cured the ignition advance grounding issue... and picked up more power... Arrrgghh Arrrgghh Arrrgghh..
Transaxle sweatin' even more now...
WAS Considering... an Ignitor and eliminating the points.. ...
I'd hate to change the simple though... and Id have to loose my transparent red solid core wires.... so.. not yet.. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

I was reading through your thread and I had a couple of questions about your carb set up.. Does it have any drive ability problems? or fuel pooling in the intake? hesitation? |
Oh yeah....
Its a big time cold natured BITCH.. It takes for freaking ever (if at all) to warm the intake up enough to really start vaporizing good. The only thing that saves it, is the way the actual head intake runner "tunnels" are designed. Once the heads are hot...they're HOT. The cooling air never really touches the the intake tunnels, so the upper head intake aluminum stay nice and toasty. The tunnels only transfer heat and are built in heat risers for the original Rochesters. With my intake fuel has a tendency to drop out of vapor suspension and yes puddle in the carb plenum base, especially at idle. I have to "clear it out" if it idles too long which is not too much. I have played with the idle mixture, but its a constant tinkering to be perfect, then it will change as the engine heats and cools...ambient temps, humidity.... etc.... so the hell with it. Inherent to the beast.. Get it decent and go... . There are much better intakes available, but they were never in my budget. The better 2x1 and 4x1 intakes have a passage to route oil through the base and it will preheat the carb and base nicely.
Most of the Corvair guys disapproved of the center carb... but its cheap, and works.
For driveability, the original carbs are much better...
To me..its a driving mans car... I have to "know how to drive it" ...and do...
|
I really like your Corvair street rod. You might want to talk to Starr Cooke about one of the intake manifolds he modifies. For $75 he welds a chamber on the bottom of the center casting which he then plumbs to have hot oil pumped through to help reduce icing and better vaporize the fuel http://www.ebay.com/itm/Corvair-140-HP-Offenhouser...1c38114cae |

Thanks for the advice
As I mentioned ... I have looked at those oil heated intakes.... but..... in reality in this particular case...
No heat in the car, plenty of natural and owner induced ventilation... soooooo. dont drive it below temps of 45.... much...
I can deal with it being a Bitch sometimes...
Rather sepnd the money on the engine "refresh" and maybe some real paint someday..
The sun really bakes the flat paint..
