The ad for the spring said "welding required" and no other instructions. I have a new spring to repair a rear backing plate and my questions before I begin are ...Is it ok to simply weld the new spring upside down to the bottom of the adjuster block while the backing plate is still on the car or should it be removed first? and also would the heat of the weld ruin the temper of the spring. I have been wondering about what others opinions might be since I need to either do this repair or replace the backing plate with the new one I have on hand that I would rather return to the supplier.
Thanks so much for all insight!
Tom

They only need to be tacked in place. A couple of spot welds is all it should take.

Jeff is right. You need to generate minimal heat when you weld it. A spot welder would be perfect, next best is tig, then mig. Do not use gas. Pull of the backing plate, tack it on then cool it with a wet rag.

When I said spot weld I was meaning a plug/rosette weld with a MIG welder. Most folks will have easier access to a MIG than a resistance/spot welder. I'm not sure what you mean about 'don't use gas'.

I have had great luck just getting the old one out and peening the new one in place.

Multi69's...What does pull of the backing plate mean? Did you mean pull off the backing plate? That would be a lot more work. Is pulling off the backing plate really necessary just for a spot weld?
Also, Is it advisable or even possible to drill a hole through the spring in order to spot weld it or should the spring merely be welded on each edge?
Just hoping to clear things up before I get started....Thanks!

Hyperspace...What is a portapak ?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

If you can get plenty of clearance to work, then you don't have to pull off the backing plate, but if it looks iffy, then take it off. What I meant by do not use gas, is do not use an oxy / acet torch. Any type of gas welding will over heat the spring and remove its temper. If you have a drill bit that is sharp enough, then drill a center hole and plug weld it as Jeff mentioned. This will not only help to keep your heat down, but if the spring is welded at both ends, it may make it very difficult to turn the star wheel.
