The car was blue when I got it. No clue what colour it was originally. I'm going to buy a birth certificate from VW eventually and see where she came from and what colour she was and then decide if I want to keep stripping paint or not. Right now the orange is pretty decent and the underside of the hood is 100% orange. Not sure if that was the original colour or not. _________________ My 1970 Beetle Thread

Nice video. I was wondering how the hell you were steering, shifting and keeping the camera on the gage.
Very dangerously Just went out of my parking lot, up the street, and then stopped at a stop sign and put away the camera. Not about to try and drive on a road that has traffic like that!! _________________ My 1970 Beetle Thread

Wow!
Just took a look at my points, they were not coming open all the way. Adjusted them to .016, car starts so much easier, the hesitation and bucking is gone, and I can drive her with very light throttle.
Took her for an 18 mile drive, it is currently 85* F outside. The highest head temp I saw was 362*F while pulling a long steep hill at 60mph in 4th gear. She cruised at roughly 315*F, coming down to 280* coasting down the back side of some hills. The oil temp read 188*F down the dipstick-compare this to my 207*F reading from last week in similar weather and a nearly identical test drive route.
Still waiting on that firewall tin, that should help cool her down even more.
Pretty damn happy right now, little by little I'm getting this car sorted out _________________ My 1970 Beetle Thread

Drove her to work today, turned the car off and the generator light comes on. I think to myself, huh that's weird, and get out of the car to smoke coming out of the engine bay.
Disconnected the battery real quick then ran over with a shop rag and put out the fire. The wires on the generator were on fire.
Not sure how this happened. I manged to get the charred mess apart and cleaned up and electrical taped enough to make it home, but the light is still on when I turn the ignition off. I'm wondering if the regulator is just going bad and trying to run the generator.
Right now the car is sitting with the battery unplugged, I'll break out the multimeter and start messing with it tomorrow. _________________ My 1970 Beetle Thread

Absolutely no idea. Possible short? It's also possible the regulator just plain wore out.
No clue really, the wiring on this car is a nightmare and the next big thing on my list of things to do. _________________ My 1970 Beetle Thread

Well I got a new voltage regulator installed, re-wired the generator, put some heat shrink and electrical tape on the wires, and put in some new generator brushes.
No more flaming wires or charred regulators, battery is charging according to my multimeter.

Spent the morning working on the drop spindles. I can't get the stock spindles off. The upper BJ's come off but the lower ones and the tie rod ends will not budge. I've tried a hammer and tried putting my jack under the spindle to support it but I cannot get anything off.
Am I doing this wrong? I remember seeing a youtube video of a guy doing drop spindles on a ball joint bug and his tie rod ends just pop right off in like 5 seconds. _________________ My 1970 Beetle Thread

They make a nifty fork tool for seperating the tie rod end from the spindle, as you wedge the fork between the spindle and the tie rod end and tap the end, it will force them apart. 10 bones at any autopart store.
If you plan on reusing your old tie rod ends, id be careful not to booger up the threads with a hammer. _________________ Daily driven 1972 beetle, no more 70autostick

Pickel fork got the driver side tie rod off. But I needed a 36" cheater bar and me standing on it to do it.
Spent the last hour trying to get the passenger side tie rod end off and I can't get any of the lower ball joints to budge an inch. When you turn the spindle the tie rod or ball join turns with it making me think its all rusted together. Currently soaking in WD-40 while I google ideas. _________________ My 1970 Beetle Thread

Well both tie rod ends are off now. Bottom ball joints are firmly stuck. I've tried massive amounts of penetrating fluid, tried doing it with bolts on and tight, put the jack under the spindle, put the tie rod and upper BJ back on and tried to use the fork like that...nothing. Ended up bending the pickle fork trying to get these damn things off.

You're doing it wrong. A "pickle fork" isn't a pry-bar. You hit the other end of it with a sledge hammer & use the wedge of the pickle fork to separate the two like this:
