I am 90 miles north of I 10, 17 miles south of I 40. 280 miles from OCTO/Classic stuff. I can run some support and offer a shop to work/make repairs in.
Dave Easterwood made the drive from Georgia to the Classic weekend and BACK something like 10 years ago in his BD, he did put a 1600 in it for the trip though. I was a return trip stop for him. Hope he sees this and pipes in, he's done it in a BD _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

if we ship the cars to Ronnie's shop, we will have to fly into Las Vegas or Phoenix and rent vehicles to get to the shop......it would be nice to face a 250 mile drive vs. a 2,500 mile drive.. ...........we need hard pricing on the transport side........ _________________ that's not patina, that's fucking rust man!!!!

I am on it, sir. Do we have a good # of vehicles? If we can fill out a transporter it will if course be less. Also, do we want/need enclosed or is everyone OK with open transport. All depends on what kind of $$$$ everyone is willing to cover. _________________ "Dirty Virgin" '56 Oval Ragtop

I think returning home in the buses would be better. We would have no "hard" deadline to be home. This way if we were a day late or so it woulden't matter. plus it would give us some extra time to see some cool sites. Count me in on the transporter. _________________ You can't polish a turd! 57 vert, 67 westy, 2011 Golf TDI 63 chevy C10 fleetside 60 single cab |

"Trasnport" 's'okay, but I'm sure there are at least some hard core guapos who'd rather do the drive all the way in their own ride... because they can!!!
Though not every one can do so, it would definitely be sweet to see a LARGE contingent from the east coast representing all over SoCal!!! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I like the idea of not having to drive back, that way I wouldn't have to take so much time off from work.
My only problem would be having my bus delived to FL, not that it matters to me that it goes there, I would just need a place to store it until I can fly down to FL and drive it back up to NY . |

Time for me to jump in... I have done this before.. It is hard.. it is hot... it can be boring at times.... But you will remember this for the rest of your life.... It is worth every bit of pain and troubles. If you have been to the Classic's, just imagine rolling your own bus around...
You have to be prepared. This is very hard on your bus. If you are going, please, please be prepared. I drove my 21 across. It ran like a champ...knock on wood... I didnt have one problem.
The recovery vertical is a must ..great idea. Parts and motors for quick change repairs is the only way to do it. Tires, belts points...ext.. When it gets closer, we are going to need a detail list of the buses going, with a list of engine sizes 6 volt 12 volt systems... Anything to help prepare extra motors and parts.( we dont need to pack up 6 volt stuff, if all the cars are 12 volt)
I'M IN!!!! Barndoor or not...... Very Happy _________________ ***WANTED***

I did it once before in the 90's in a MINI Truck and it was a UNFORGETABLE TRIP. If all goes well this coming year, I'M IN for the drive TOO! BUT I'll be driving back down thru Route 66 with my family into TEXAS and head south to I-10 then east to Florida.
This is a trip that many VW owners, including myself, have dreamed about for a long time and I'm looking forward to it! Lets Make it happen! _________________ http://miamivdubs.com/

I think that would be best, I think just the thought of driving back from Cali after all of the weekend's events would be fucking terrible..... I would suggest driving there, do the weekend's events, turn the bus over to the transporter, and fly back....then arrange to get your vehicle from an agreed upon location on the East Coast, maybe Jacksonville....... |
I can save you all a lot of trouble. Get to Octo & enjoy your week. Why stress on the drive home you can store all your barndoors at my house |

thanks Ed for your offer to store the buses...
we need to draw up a list of VW related shops along the route all the way to So Cal...in the event that we need parts that we do not have with us, we need to be able to source them along the route, or have them sent to a shop along the route.....tons of shit to plan, but fun... _________________ that's not patina, that's fucking rust man!!!!

Being "hardcore" is'nt the issue here. Just figured I'd rather spend my two weeks I'd take off seeing more sites in my bus rather than bombing my bus from point A to point B and back again. Either way I'm in. Bus is currently getting a full makeover. Better add some mechanical work to the list. _________________ You can't polish a turd! 57 vert, 67 westy, 2011 Golf TDI 63 chevy C10 fleetside 60 single cab |

I've never driven East Coast to West Coast in a bus, but I've driven from NJ to Tampa for the Bullibrigade many times. Its about 1200 miles, a bit less than half the coast to coast trip.
In my experience, large bus caravans travel MUCH more slowly than two or three well prepared buses traveling together. Here's what has happened to me on the Bullibrigade trips.
I always leave my house around 6am Wednesday before the show.
When in big caravans, we have arrived in Tampa as early as 1am on Friday morning, and as late as noon on Friday.
When alone or with two or three other buses, arrival has ranged from noon THURSDAY to about 3pm Thursday.
So, going flat out in a 40 horse, RGB bus, the best time I've done is 31 hours, with a 5 hour sleep break in Georgia at a rest stop.
31-5=26 hours driving and stops for gas only.
1200 miles / 26 hours = 46.2 mph
I was pretty much going flat out at 58-62mph the whole way, so that 12 or so mph penalty is due to having to slow down and stop for gas every 150-200 miles.
Now, in a big caravan, do the math.
Best 6am Wed. to 1am Friday = 43 hours total.
We stopped for about 6 hours at the rest stop.
43-6=37 hours driving plus stops
1200 miles / 37 hours = 32 mph!!!!!
This sorry result is due to incessant stops for gas and repairs, waiting for people to join the caravan and to go to the bathroom and get yet another Stuckey's peanut log when they damn well could have gotten it when the other fucking people were filling up their fucking tanks with fucking gas, FUCK!!!!
....Anyways....
I recommend the smaller caravan. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

good point.....I have a feeling that as D day draws near we will be dropping people left and right......I hope not, but that is usually how it works out.....life gets in the way, and that initial euphoria tends to wear out with time........we'll see..... _________________ that's not patina, that's fucking rust man!!!!

I unfortunatelly have no patience to drive in caravans, did once with only 4 vehicles and much shorter distance and was ready to rip my hair out when people were making stops at Walmarts for shit they should have gotten before the trip
as cool as it sounds I can't see myself spending all my vacation time on I-10
I like the idea of transporting vehicles west let's say Phoenix then caravan t the show and driving back afterwards individually/caravan or whatever each individual wants to do, doing so you'll know exactly who's serious and who's not as deposits/transportation would have to be arranged well ahead of time _________________ Florida Camping (GVC)

Gerson,
Hey, I'm not bagging on the idea of getting as many Barndoor buses as possible to the OCTO/Classics next year.
I definitely plan to attend, this should be amazing.
I'm just warning of the pitfalls of both large groups and ill-prepared participants. Not that anyone, even the best prepared can't suck a valve and grenade an engine at a moment's notice.
Its just that if you have 15 buses, and someone blows an engine, it totally sucks if everyone has to stop while the issue is resolved.
I'd say to plan for small groups following a designated route, with backup plans for taking care of the inevitable breakdowns.
This would be more flexible for all, those wanting to take their time could leave earlier, and the MadMax types will leave at 4pm on Monday before the show.
Now I just gotta get a barndoor to drive.... _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS
