It looks like you're sliding it down the shaft to get it to the Chassis? You have to remove the tube first, place the rubber in the hole on the chassis and then install the tube in it. You can't slide it down the tube like that. There's a small rubber boot that goes on the clutch end.

This is what it looks like:

Looked at your pic again... I'm not sure that my answer was correct. I was speaking of the rubber fitting that goes in the clutch cable exit hole in the chassis. I'm not sure that's what you're installing. Hmmm...

It's been a while since I had mine apart but I don't remember a grommet at the bowden tube mount. But then again, I don't have a '68. Is it loose in the mount without the grommet? Are you replacing an old grommet or adding something that wasn't there before? Do the parts drawings for your year show this as a separate part or is it part of the bowden tube itself?

My bowden tube sticks out far enough to get the grommet on. I just replaced it and the cable from w.w. There should be shims on the innerside of the trans mount that gives the tube more bend.Maybe there's more than needed can't tell from the pic angle. Take a couple out if possible and the tube should poke out. If not I'd replace the tube.

Wow. That is strange. Maybe you need a Ghia bowden tube? Do you have a local bug shop that can help you sort through this? When parts are mismatched like this, it's tough to know what's going to work with your car.
