SunRay, Could you please make a new video of the shape of the yard? Or maybe some pics of the VWs that are getting sold/saved? I think we would like to see new info, thanks. |
Hi Harvey,
Things are a bit hectic here at the moment but as soon as we are able to, we will post some interesting pics for everyone. We are photographing a lot of stuff and will be able to post more about it once this issue is over and in our rear view mirror. You can also expect some classifieds as the moderators have suggested, but we will have to wait until things die down a bit and we have time to sort through what is left, catalog it and price it. _________________ Sunray Bugs

Thanks so much for coming in and we are glad you found the fenders you needed. Sorry that we weren't around when it came time to pay, but we appreciated your honesty by leaving the note for us with the $50 in it. We had a legal issue to tend to with the county's agent T&J Salvage attempting to seize 180 cars that we had moved temporarily to a vacant neighboring lot. This move was done to make room for the mobile crushing unit and the vacant lot next door was being used as a temporary staging area. We have a good relationship with this absentee land owner as Corky has kept the lot mowed for him over the years free of charge. According to this land owner, someone had contacted him, identified themselves as code enforcement and scared him into thinking he would be fined and charged the cost of removal of the cars if he didn't agree to let the county's agent scrap the cars immediately. The scrap company contracted by the county taped off the area and forbid Corky and our men from entering the property to retrieve the cars and/or our equipment, like our portable air compressor and other tools that we were using in the cleanup. Luckily, our attorney was on site and as he was on the phone informing our neighbor of his rights as a property owner, he suggested our men and volunteers form a human chain to prevent the county's agent from illegally seizing and crushing these 180 cars that were not even part of the original court order. Once this neighbor was calm and understood what was really going on and our attorney had informed him of what his legal rights really were, he agreed to allow Corky the time to clear them off himself and signed a document revoking the agreement he had been asked to create for the county's agent. And... all of this was going on when you were there trying to buy fenders!
All of the staff and volunteers cheered when our attorney served the county agent T&J Salvage with the revocation letter from the neighbor and grown men actually cried as our attorney shouted "tear down that tape!".
Speaking of volunteers. The outpouring of support from our local customers has been unbelievable and we are so grateful for the people who dedicated their time and resources to help us move cars, drive the equipment and save valuable parts, etc. The county had seized much of Corky's equipment including several of his flatbed trailers, his tow dollies, his forklift and other equipment and crushed it, further impeding his ability to comply with the order. But many of our customers took time off work and volunteered their time to help us with their own trucks and trailers. Some brought food for all of the employees and volunteers. It was a very emotional day for everyone involved and we appreciated all of the help from the local VW community, our loyal customers, friends and volunteers from the bottom of our hearts. Ok here's what really needs to be said.
Corky's what, 80+ years old. He's got/had over 800ish VWs sitting on this property. Now he's still saying that some are keepers, etc, etc. How old is Corky planning on living or still working on VWs for that matter? I'm not trying to be rude here, but seriously, say if he keeps 50 cars that he'll restore. Will he ACTUALLY restore ALL of them? I highly doubt it
Pick up any of Tom Cotter's "In the barn books" about cars just like these VWs that have sat and sat and sat and sat in some ones yard, property, warehouse, garage whatever, and some one shows up with cash in hand wanting to buy it to restore and put back on the road only to get shot down with "I'm going to restore it someday." And guess what, that someday never comes. That pretty much sums up what I see taking place as we speak. He can move all the cars he wants to this "other" property , but what's going to stop that county or some other local gov't agency come down on Corky again? I mean it's seriously become the time to wake up and smell the roses here rather than looking at the world through rose colored glasses.
I mean if someone is standing in front of you waving money saying here! This is what I'll give you for this car. And someone can actually stand there and say, no it's a vintage car that's worth more as scrap and I'd rather see it be scrapped than restored and put back on the road, So my asking price is $xxxx. Give me a break. _________________ Yeah I like Herbie AND New Beetles. Got a problem with it? Tough.

Interesting question... So let me see if I understand this correctly.
Because Corky is 80+ years old, he is too old to own VW's or take part in the VW hobby. At what age do you propose we begin taking away peoples possessions and redistributing them to the younger healthier of the species? Should that redistribution of possessions start at 80... Or maybe it should start at 70? Is 70 too old for someone to enjoy collecting cars?
Or is it the number of cars that we should limit the elderly people from owning? Maybe we should restrict it to 1 car for every decade of life. So, that way Corky could own 8.2 cars. But wait a minute, can he actually restore all 8.2 cars in the years he has left? Well.. how many years does he have left? Let's see if the average restoration takes 1 year to complete and the average person lives to be 85. Maybe we should all be OK with Corky owning 3 cars.
OH shoot, but what happens if he keels over tonight in his sleep? Then we have allowed the old geezer to have 3 too many cars that could have otherwise been redistributed to some of the younger more healthy human specimens on earth that are more deserving of VW ownership. LOL! _________________ Sunray Bugs

But seriously, in response to the question about the value of the cars versus the value of salvage, and what Corky wants for the cars he owns... yadda yadda yadda....
I think some of you do not fully understand the issue. The issue is with the junk vehicles on the property that can be seen from the highway. That is what started the original complaint. It is not about running cars, the selling of VW parts, the restoration or repair of vehicles, etc. It is these junk salvage vehicles that must be dealt with and dealt with immediately.
The balance of the vehicles (not scrap or junkers) will be dealt with at a later date. Most of them will be for sale, but they will not be sold for scrap price ($100-120 according to one guys extremely low calculation of what the scrap metal would be worth in Oklahoma) and they will not be crushed if they are decent rebuildable cars like the moss-covered blue '62 that the guy bought from Corky... you know the one that VWDarrin complained was sold for way too much money, but after he cleaned it up, he said it was a bargain and a cherry of a car. _________________ Sunray Bugs

could you clean up this thread I am tired of reading all this bullshit that people are giving Corky it needs to be about info ONLY. Hope you find that orange bay window a good home .

Hi Stuart,
Is this ridiculous, or what? We will try to find as many of these vehicles a good home as possible. But right now, we have to get rid of the scrap metal and junk (salvage).
We do not have time to deal with the selling of the rebuildable cars, etc. at the present time. We have to remove the junk that can be seen from the highway by Friday. So we are moving the good vehicles to a safe location until we are in compliance and have more time to clean the good ones up, list them properly on ebay or The Samba, perhaps get some of them running, etc.
We are offering good deals right now to help clear some things out, but some of these people expect to pay $100-$120 for cars like that '62 that VWDarrin posted on Youtube. That folks is unrealistic. |
What is scrap price on that '62 Beetle? That's what's going to be "realistic", is what it sounds like to me. Sorry.
What's the county or whatever gonna bill you guys for the cleanup? You know they will. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

What scrap price is for the '62 Beetle is irrelevent... The '62 Beetle did not go to the crusher and it was never intended for the crusher. It was sold to an enthusiast who paid well over scrap price for it and apparently is happy and feels the car is "cherry" and a "bargain" at the price he paid for it. _________________ Sunray Bugs

i once had a friend named Tom, he sat on all this cool shit for 40 plus years. one day he lost his shop due to the actual property owner dying and the verbal 40 year agreement was gone. well he was reported to the city and was told to get rid of everything in 30days. now i could have sold his stuff for ten here and twenty there. but he wanted 60 here and 100 there. in the end he lost it all as scrap...most was just trashed. barely sold the cars he had for a few hundred each where i could have made him a couple thousand. im sad to say he was killed while installing a mirror on his truck in the street when a drunk driver side swiped him a few months later. i know there are values in "things" that others want, but i learned early on we cant take it with us. what good are rusty cars if they are kept to avoid selling them at scrap prices? any way good luck and id like to see scrapping vids or chopping or whatever. _________________ once you realize im not impressed we will get along just fine |

I once had a friend that had a Corvette salvage yard. He decided to quit the business and found a buyer that took it all off his hands at a reasonable price... well above scrap price... but below retail. That Corvette salvage yard still operates today. _________________ Sunray Bugs

I'm not at liberty to discuss much regarding the legal issues at the moment. But lets say we are going to be charged for the cleanup... then that is all the more reason for us to sell things at market value or perhaps a bit below market value rather than take pennies on the dollar for it. |
Really? You'd rather not take "pennies on the dollar" in your pocket...you'd rather pay the county for taking it away and crushing it?
ROFLMAO. What a business model!
You want to deal in facts, eh? The FACT is, that's idiotic. No wonder you're in the jam you're in. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

That's nice. That friend of yours must have had all his business licenses and his zoning in order, parts actually worth buying, and something other than a crack pipe as a price guide. Thus, he had time to sell on his own terms because he hadn't ignored at least a year's worth of notices from the county that he was in violation, and thus didn't have his back against the wall. See the difference? No, you probably don't. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

LOL! That's a good one. You got me there, didn't you. If none of the parts are worth buying, why are we having this discussion?
Ya' know, I like a good debate as much as the next guy, but I was really hoping that people would have some valid questions or want to learn what the real issues are, what future plans for the company were, etc. etc.
So far most of this sparring back and forth has been a complete waste of my time other than providing some much needed entertainment and a way to pass time in the evenings that I would probably be wasting watching some stupid reality show or crime story, anyway.
Look folks... this issue is more complex than most of you know. It's late, gotta get up and go to work in the morning where I have an enormous amount of work to accomplish in a very short amount of time. If anyone has any real needs or has genuine questions that need to be answered, please PM me. I'm here to provide some accurate and truthful answers.
In the meantime, the rest of you can be thinking up the next insult or assinine comment to make to me and I'll respond it tomorrow. Good night. _________________ Sunray Bugs

so, enlighten us - rather that filling pages with your drivel, give us the low-down on when/where Sunray Bugs is going to reopen their doors and re-dedicate the company to the restoration of VW's....

Seriously, if you guys read the WHOLE thread, then I think you would stop posting so much. Take the time to read through it, and if you still have comments, then post them. Otherwise, I really hope mods can handle all this clean-up work. Almost like moderating the Samba is like running a salvage yard anymore. Sorry guys! _________________ email: [email protected]

This thread is a great example of how some people don't live in reality and that said people have a persecution complex if others point out the errors of their ways.
Collecting is nice, and a true collector would understand the point where he is unable to save everything. A true collector understands that if he truly believes something should be saved for future generations it is better to either cut his losses pass the item(s) to another who can care for said item(s).
One of the best readers' letters submitted to Auto Restorer Magazine was from a grandfather who owned several classic cars intended for his grandsons. One day, he realized that holding the cars until he passed was a bit selfish because 1) the cars weren't being appreciated on a regular basis and just sat in storage, and 2) he wouldn't truly see his grandsons enjoying the cars. So, as each obtained his driver's license the grandfather signed ownership the intended vehicle to the grandson. The grandfather has the opportunity of maintaining the vehicles with his grandsons, teaching vehicle maintenance, and can share the joys of owning a classic vehicle with his grandchildren.
Long story short, the owner of Sunray has been cutting off his nose to spite his face. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

I guess we'll know in 24 hours how this little drama finally ends.
Until then, please try to keep things civil. I've deleted a few posts, but frankly it's such a mess at this point that the next step is to make the whole thread go away. |

Couldn't agree more. I came on here to report the goings on and the sad reality that the situation at Sunray was completely out of control. After repeated attempts to ask who exactly Sunray is, we are treated to BS lengthy posts that make no sense. None of us are hiding behind a keyboard here. Some of us including myself have offered up our real names. We didn't say we "represent the vw enthusiast..."
I'm friends with Scooter. I know what he paid for the car. It wasn't cheap. So the moss cleaned up off of it. Big deal. It doesn't make it newsworthy. Yes, I'm glad he was able to save a car from the yard, but that doesn't set a precedence for every other outrageous price being quoted at the yard. It was almost surreal when Corky quoted my friend $1000 for what amounted to a rusty stripped out shell, when cars were literally being picked up and crushed 100 yards away. The next day on Craigslist in Orlando we found a car with a motor and zilch for rust for $400 and bought it. My point in bringing this up is that I think lot of us have gotten caught up in the "story." Emotions were definitely running high from all sides. Corky was losing his prized possessions, and vw enthusiasts wanted to save the VWs from the crusher. Nobody that was out there Monday "needed" another vw. Everyone I spoke to was like myself-most of us having at least 3-4 pristine cars in the garage already. None of us "had to have" another project. We were there because we had been moved by the story, swayed by word of mouth and wanted to help save a bug or two from an early death. In the end it would have amounted to paying a premium for the "opportunity" to save a vw from the crusher. Thanks, but no thanks.
SunRay-All you have done here on this thread is come across as delusional, ignorant, and reflect very poorly on the so called company you represent. After all the bulldozers, claws, county workers, and dust clears, I can guarantee as a reputable vw shop, its days are numbered, if it's fate isn't already sealed when the cleanup bill arrives. It wont be cheap. V-dub folks wont soon forgive and forget this mess, and I don't know a single vw enthusiast who would want to support this place after the PR nightmare that has been this week. |
