Normally I try and avoid the major highways around here (Wash DC area). I've always enjoyed the bus because I could never be aggressive in it - made for a more relaxing drive. And I stand a better chance of seeing that bus for sale on the side of the road
There are nuts out there tho. Had one try and pass me on the right only to have a bridge take out the shoulder Luckily he hit his brakes instead of veering back into me. When in the bus I find it annoying when people pull out in front of me either because they think I can't do more than 25 mph or they just don't want to get behind me.
I'm with Desertbusman - that's exactly how my dad taught me how to drive. At any given moment he would quiz me - how many cars? where are they around you? What would you do if this guy slammed on his brakes etc....

The sharp pain in my neck has finally gone from my drive from San Antonio to Seattle. Its the cautious aware hawk habbit that wore me down on the journey. it was more of a point a ot b drive with little rest. Making sure i was good-the bus runnin g good and my girlfriend was safe in her car pulling a trailer took 10 years off my life! Stressful as hell!
I hope I never move in it again. I will take long trips with no cares of where or when I need to be. Thats what its made for and why I bought it.

I have to disagree. I've driven my Bus cross country, to Canada, Mexico, and Wyoming and I've really never had a problem. Driving in the Bay Area to San Jose daily for 6 months I had no problems. Maybe you guys are doing something I'm not. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

People don't know how to drive fast correctly is the problem ! Everyone is insane when they go fast, when I drive faster (in the bimmer) it is very tastefull and controlled, there is a certain technique needed to jet pass somebody at 95 on a two lane road. People need to stop being in a rush is the root of the problem, when I drive fast it is for enjoyment not necesity ! _________________ 1978 champagne Edition II Bus |

I built a little stroker (1745) and upgraded to 205 75 15s on the back of my bus. Now I can cruise along at 65 with no worries.
I live right off a major hiway with a speed limit of 65, which really means 75, and I've almost been hit in my bug quite a few times going 55.
I'm not worried about keeping up with traffic but the ten mph buffer between 55 and 65 seems to make quite a difference. |

I disagree. Make your bus go faster! It is not realistic to keep up with traffic otherwise.
Oh and SG Kent. Get out of the fast lane dude!

There is a bloke in Blighty selling 5 of the "Please Pass" signs.
Maybe the guy that saw you and didn't pass doesn't read English.
For Kalifornia do they have any in Spanish?

I felt safe when driving the Bus down the interstate.
I held 'er at 55-60. Stayed in the far right lane except when I could see heavy traffic wanting to merge as if their light just changed.
I had way less road rage in the 55-60 range. Came from a 5.0 to a 2.0 which was a rude awakening.
The damn speed limit is 65 in most states. Cruising at 60 should be just peachy, with everyone, huh?
People still understand that Vee-Dubs are slow. I just let them go around.
Of the many, if not all, of the peoples that passed me had an issue, I'd merely blow 'em a kiss followed by the finger but they were long gone to notice.
Do the math. Distance vs speed is not enough to worry about.
Slow down. Enjoy the ride.
Just some memories from an ex Bus pilot
Damn economy. Wait. What was the question? |

Other than the Thing, no matter which VW I drive, I tell the GPS avoid highways. But even the 60 mph back roads can have some angry soul doing all they can to get around you. I pull over - I would rather slow 'em down once than have them ride my ass. I don't like caravans for that reason.. The bus I followed could hardly maintain 50 mph and the speed limit was 65 - 2 lane road and 4 of us in the convoy. The leader of the pack was a youngster and just wouldn't pull off the side to let the mile long jam behind us go by... The poor guy in the rear had a semi pushing him almost... Courtesy goes a long way on the road... And a Third Brake Light _________________ 82 Westy ☢, 66 Splitty ☮, 73 Type 181 ✠ |

Thanks, it's a NOS 40 to 50 years old after market part that i bought in the UK.
Here is a pic from behind, the wires run tru the jailbar pipes and i connected it to the screen defogger (this one doesn't work anymore) so i can use the switch to turn it on
The brackets that slide over the jailbar pipes are home made.

I agree with alot on here that making a bus go faster wont work becoz you will always have people driving faster then you.
My question is as i want to buy a bus what is the maximum speed(if the stock engine is ok,e.g 1.6,1.7,1.8 or 2 liter) the bus can reach driving on the freeway?
Here in holland the maximum speed on some highways is 100 km per hour(63 mph) or 120 km per hour(75 mph) and i want to know if a stock engine will handle this speed on the highway without any problems.
I have heard that the bus wont handle a certain speed for a long period of time but what would be a save driving speed going with the modern day traffic of now.

For a 1600- A lot of people have different attitudes about this. But many of us consider 55-60 mph as a good practical driving speed on long level drives. Can it go faster? Sure. Maybe 80 but it will tear it up quick. _________________ 71 Superbug

I agree a 100% - even with a big motor 60 - 65 is tops, drifting into the high 50's every now and then... Primarily because your doing about 3800 rpms At that point things start to rattle a little.. My bus will do 70 forever, but it is loud, the shifter rattles just enough to annoy you, and the noise is almost doubled (wind/motor/trans etc.)
I prefer weirdly enough about 63 (100 klicks) as my cruise speed - and at a mile a minute it is easy to obtain ones ETA. _________________ 82 Westy ☢, 66 Splitty ☮, 73 Type 181 ✠ |
