i don't think you will race this imp.

40 hp on a 600 kg car are enough, in my opinion, if you are not a professional driver.

you could get something more if you need to rebuild it (something near 1500 but not more)

some little added power could be filter, exhaust and a 010 distributor, that is a very cool part and nearly "all out" at 2500 rpm

just keep it simple, in my opinion.

the look is important. think and look what you see in the engine looking at the car:

pulleys, tinwear, distributor, valve covers, exhaust.

pulleys:

the real important look of a buggy engine. My favourite part is "Empi dress up Kit". Buy it NOS. Ubeliavable quality (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1089085)

this is an example. there are two kind you can find easily on ebay, here, cal-look.no One is this. all chrome. american quality of fixing and chrome. goes over original germn pulleys. no shitty chinese one needed.

there is another kind i prefer, with the external ring of crank pulley in black with degrees. the way to go!

distributor:

is your s a 010 centrifugal? very cool part to restore and preserve. a piece of history. ask to glenn ring , the true specialist. NO better distibutor for your car are available.

valve covers:

the best choice could be a set of original empi gt. i am afraid they are a little expensive.
i used dynosoars....but the price is even higher....

every aluminum valve cover with vintage design will work great

exhaust:

if you love dual, just buy something that looks old, with roud ends mufflers a n cone exit. all chrome or painted with chrome cone. ur coiche. once they painted white. CYclone headers are very cool. they are metallic blue

In my opinion the best is a 4 into 1 with high muffler. period ones were very different. nowadays they are too straight. a friend of mine does a top quality repro of original empi ones. i would consider it seriously:

find one is not impossible.

In case you keep your original one, just chrome it.

FOR THE REST:

if the engine is running good, leave it alone. change oil a couple of times, adjust valve and go.

but get it naked to the last EXTERNAL SCREW and clean, polish, plate every bolt and pushrods tube.

not much chrome, please. only coil support, pulleys, bolts. all the rest original. just repaint in same colours and clean all.

probably 40-50 hp won't kick your ass, but they are enough to have some fun...

remember vintage is a lifestyle....

Since there's a place for the radio,I think I will get one.My new mirrors like you all suggested have the antenna built in.My original exhaust is saveable but not the type most people want.It is the correct Empi one.I'll try to save it and have it coated somehow but more likely will replace it.I also got an old Porsche ignition switch.

If you end up with a complete Imp kit it won't matter what engine you put in, you won't be able to see it anyway!!!lol...

honestly i would not use neither side pods, nor engine cover.

in my opinion they are very heavy look and they add unuseful weight

i find them no dune buggy at all, especially not typical of mk1 imps.

i like porsche ignition key

i would add no filters on the stock engine.

I'm not a side pod sort of guy and I assume they came out on the later series,not the 1968 style.My distributor is 0231129010 with no vacuum advance.Is that you you mean by a 10 distributor?My ignition came today and looks great for the buggy.The other day,I put new VDO guts in my Empi tach and it looks completely original.Would still like a good bezel for it,though.I need to send the headlights to a chromer.Please recommend one.

You dont need to chrome the headlights. Just buy new. They will be cheaper.
If you still want to chrome them or anything else, We use Kerr West in AZ. Mike does great work.
