if you show me a radila tire of that period, commonly used on dune buggies, i will send you a bottle of good italian wine!!!

Top picture is the 70 Empi catalog. I think thats a Dunlop radial on the top Sprint Star. I think the ones on the right Sportster are Fuldas maybe? I've PMd my mailing address.

that is not empi 1970 catalogue. that's 1971 or 1972. i am the happy owner of 1970 one. there is no "filter dynamics logo" at the base page on 1970 one, simply beacuse in 1970 Empi were still owned by vittone family. It was sold to 1971 to filter dynamics.

i cheked every page of catalogue i have, and i have to say that, even if imps mk2 are rarely equipped with radials, mk1 like roger's one are never.

i have the "empi accelerator magazine" issue 1968

It was released to lanch the new imp remembering to people the old sportster was still on.

on this magazine i've found:

gates commando, farm flotation, street bias. that's all official period literature shows about imp mk1 and so i don't feel to be wrong about it.

but i want to be generous and become friends, cause i love tenacious persons: do you prefer red or white? we have good alternatives to french champagne here in the north of Italy!!!!!! Wink

It's getting toward engine time.I'm asking especially the "period correct" buggy guys.I plan to use the existing engine, which is a 65 or so--or pull my Bug engine, which is about the same but in good shape for sure and has lots of power for some reason. Or should I get a 70's motor and make it bigger.I plan to just putt around town, mostly.

The other thing is the radio.I think I'd like an Empi one but could get an AM/FM Sapphire.Rarely do I even turn a radio on in any other vehicle so the practicallity matters little. Please give your opinion.

Always looking for Empi stuff, esp. white globe temp gauge.

basically i would let the 1200 (1300?) engine on.

i don't think you will race this imp.

40 hp on a 600 kg car are enough, in my opinion, if you are not a professional driver.

you could get something more if you need to rebuild it (something near 1500 but not more)

some little added power could be filter, exhaust and a 010 distributor, that is a very cool part and nearly "all out" at 2500 rpm

just keep it simple, in my opinion.

the look is important. think and look what you see in the engine looking at the car:

pulleys, tinwear, distributor, valve covers, exhaust.

pulleys:

the real important look of a buggy engine. My favourite part is "Empi dress up Kit". Buy it NOS. Ubeliavable quality (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1089085)

this is an example. there are two kind you can find easily on ebay, here, cal-look.no One is this. all chrome. american quality of fixing and chrome. goes over original germn pulleys. no shitty chinese one needed.

there is another kind i prefer, with the external ring of crank pulley in black with degrees. the way to go!

distributor:

is your s a 010 centrifugal? very cool part to restore and preserve. a piece of history. ask to glenn ring , the true specialist. NO better distibutor for your car are available.

valve covers:

the best choice could be a set of original empi gt. i am afraid they are a little expensive.
i used dynosoars....but the price is even higher....

every aluminum valve cover with vintage design will work great

some examples

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1178089

http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,16412.0.html

http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,6718.0.html

These are my favourite:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-36hp-25hp-aluminum-valv...25688c06a7

exhaust:

if you love dual, just buy something that looks old, with roud ends mufflers a n cone exit. all chrome or painted with chrome cone. ur coiche. once they painted white. CYclone headers are very cool. they are metallic blue

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=779502

In my opinion the best is a 4 into 1 with high muffler. period ones were very different. nowadays they are too straight. a friend of mine does a top quality repro of original empi ones. i would consider it seriously:

http://www.dunewagon.com/product-p/003.htm

NEVER use this kind:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=759298

inlet manifold:

coolest choice could use a vintage empi holley bugspray kit

http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php?topic=116.0

find one is not impossible.

In case you keep your original one, just chrome it.

FOR THE REST:

if the engine is running good, leave it alone. change oil a couple of times, adjust valve and go.

but get it naked to the last EXTERNAL SCREW and clean, polish, plate every bolt and pushrods tube.

not much chrome, please. only coil support, pulleys, bolts. all the rest original. just repaint in same colours and clean all.

just my opinion, obviously...

probably 40-50 hp won't kick your ass, but they are enough to have some fun...

remember vintage is a lifestyle....

for the radio:

no radio at all.

Great stuff,Filippo.I already got the full older fan cover, chrome plastic.Like this:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1011392

Since there's a place for the radio,I think I will get one.My new mirrors like you all suggested have the antenna built in.My original exhaust is saveable but not the type most people want.It is the correct Empi one.I'll try to save it and have it coated somehow but more likely will replace it.I also got an old Porsche ignition switch.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1204349

It has the old VW keys and I like that. What do you think about the Empi add on oil spin filter?

honestly i would not use neither side pods, nor engine cover.

in my opinion they are very heavy look and they add unuseful weight

i find them no dune buggy at all, especially not typical of mk1 imps.

i like porsche ignition key

i would add no filters on the stock engine.

When I was growing up in the 60s, I and everybody my age thought big finned Cadillacs were embarrassing jokes. Now pretty much everybody loves them, and I'd enjoy owning a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham as much as a Dino Ferrari. Tastes change and often come full circle, even strongly held and loudly expressed ones, and the people who recognize that early are usually the ones with the best toys in their garage.

one Imp side pod = 10.2 lbs
one Manx side pod = 9.2 lbs

Side pod on Imp during a broad side accident... Priceless!

I'm not a side pod sort of guy and I assume they came out on the later series, not the 1968 style. My distributor is 0231129010 with no vacuum advance. Is that you you mean by a 10 distributor? My ignition came today and looks great for the buggy. The other day,I put new VDO guts in my Empi tach and it looks completely original.Would still like a good bezel for it,though.I need to send the headlights to a chromer. Please recommend one.

You dont need to chrome the headlights. Just buy new. They will be cheaper.
If you still want to chrome them or anything else, We use Kerr West in AZ. Mike does great work.

Hi Roger,

Just for reference, I am using the Stainless Steel Dietz Type headlights from Speedway Motors. I have seen posts where others use them as well, and are very happy with the product:

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Stainless-Steel-Dietz-Type-Headlights,4119.html

They are also offered in chrome.

AAA Plating and Polishing in Sacramento. I've had them do original Dietz 820s. I told them to be careful of the lettering on the shell and they came out perfect.
