Hey, for something different you could always build it in this style like they've done in somewhere Arabic (I guess...)...

Thanks Tom. I see in the copy of the Imp build book
http://www.tjkustoms.com/pdf/EMPI%20Imp.pdf
the steering brakes are just like the ones I show on my car.I wonder if the brake handles earlier in this thread are for a later Imp?
Anyhow, the car is home and I'm ready to start messing with it.

You're right, that's the type in the manual.

Until you find an original pair of front turn indicators, these look very close

The fronts can be karmann ghia turn signals. They are easy to get and look great. The org's, Not so easy.

Ghia would probably be preferable for a true restoration.

Somebody in the Imp Register ought to get an original and cast some replica housings.

A couple more things on my Imp. I see the windshield frame must be on backwards according to the construction manual. It looks better for the groove to go toward the rear but it has to go to the front to hook the tops,I guess. I'll bet there are more than one Imp with this mistake.
The other thing,I want to know if this shifter is recognized. I'd like to put an Empi one on. If this is Empi,I'll doll it up.If not, please say what kind od shifter would be most likely for a 68-69 Imp.

The windshield isn't a mistake, its a choice. Some people choose for appearance (or aerodynamics?) to deliberately mount it backwards.

Here's one type of the most desirable original EMPI shifters, The Eliminator,

Don't be tempted by an EMPI E-Z-R shifter like I was...total load of trash!!! I recon it'd look better and be more 'authentic' with later 'tombstone' shaped taillights with chromed housings.

That looks like a (much) better version of what you've got already. It clamps onto the sawn-off stub of the original shifter. It should be fine. It would work well with a Quick-Shift kit if you wanted a shorter throw.

I don't know if EMPI sold that type of shifter in the 60s but Lee Eliminators (the brand on that card) bought EMPI in 71.

Flat 4 makes good EMPI replica stuff. You can buy an incomplete original shifter on The Samba and get parts like knobs or boots from them.

http://www.flat4.co.jp/japanese/dtail-in.html#IN-233

I think they also have the type mirrors you need.

These seem to be a good stainless replacement headlight for the price, I'm running them and plan to pick up a spare set....

I think he's got the original Dietz 620s on it now. A good chrome shop can replate them without buffing out the lettering.

I have a lead on the right Imp front signal lights. We'll see if it plays out.
If I leave the old 40 horse motor and carb in,which Empi air filter would look correct for the period?Rember, mine is the older Imp.

Did you get some original front signal lights? Can you post a pic?

I don't believe the carb is directly visible on the Imp. If it will fit, I would use the original oil bath filter or maybe one with a Ghia intake. Its what Geoff used on his Manx and looks better and more correct for a vintage buggy than any aftermarket chrome one, (unless you go to a remote mounted Tri-Phase centrifugal off-road type which isn't your buggy's style).

Good idea on the filter. My lead on the lights fell thru but I'd like to have anybody with the correct early Imp light(the oval plastic ones) let me know if I could try to make one from their's.One guy has nos lights but I don't want to mess them up.I have asked him to send me some shots of the nos lights to get a good look at them.
I did get an nos roll bar so I wouldn't have to chrome mine. Also,I picked up an nos front bumper, skid plate, and front Empi stabilizer bar.Of course,I paid thru the nose for these.
Please tell us all you can about the lights up front for the old Imps.I saw the old thread but would like more info and pictures.

If you can find someone to lend you an old one, you should be able to have some replica housings cast in brass. You could drill and tap the housings for mounting screws and machine them to fit generic bulb sockets and JB Weld the sockets in. You could also machine the housing to fit whatever lense you could find that's as close to the originals as possible. After you have them fabricated you could have them polished and chromed and they'd be practically identical and actually better than the originals.

I saw these a while back and asked if they were still around but they're not.
