I'm buying this Imp this week for $2000.It has a Empi wheel with crazed hub,2 Empi wheels,2 Dietz headlights, front badge,id #(476),bad motor and parked since 1994.It is gold flake under the white.Seats are fiber glass tilt.BOth rear pans are bad.It has title.I know it's a bad deal but tell me how bad a deal you think it is.thanks,Roger

I have seen a lot worse with the owner asking for 2500+.

This one needs a lot of work but the basic body is there.

I'd see if you could knock it down another $500 or so just for the general condition. Imps aren't particularly rare; if you got it, though, I'd certainly send that steering wheel out to be restored - they're worth a decent amount of money in good shape.

The steering wheel in restored condition is worth the price of the buggy and it also has the hard to find EMPI IMP emblem on the front.
I have seen worse for the same money.

That's a great find. With the # tag, Dietz 820 headlights and I'm no expert but I think those seats were original Empi Imp too. The rear wheels are wide Empi Sprint Stars. You can get replicas for the front if a pair of originals don't turn up. The lights and rollbar should all be rechromed and the gold flake redone.

A buggy like that really needs to be faithfully restored. There's no end of Empi accessories, its such time capsule, it needs to stay true to the 1968 style. It will also be worth a lot more.

I wonder, Did the tornado have anything to do with that coming to light?

I think Tom is the guy to go to, to get the seats upholstered.

You already have all the hard bits. If when the restoration is done it looks like this below, you could make 10 times your original investment.

Thanks to all for the info.I really thought I was over the top on the $ but maybe it will work out.I have a body shop and do all the mechanical as well. The storm here had nothing to do with finding it.It's been sitting like this for a long time.I'd like to buy some Empi stuff for it so please contact me if you have something.I know I need an inside mirror and a pair of outside and a rear badge. Please tell me what else I'm missing or could add. Thanks so much,Roger in Joplin at [email protected]

That's an early one. You could get some sidepods for it, but they are hard to find. I would try to clean up the rear wheels and try to find some fronts to match. Its good that nobody hacked any big holes into it and tail's not cut. I agree that steering wheel cleaned up is worth some $$.

I had a blue Empi Imp back in the mid 80's. I miss that thing, very cool buggy.

Great find! This is going to be a great thread.

From the sounds of it....I'd sell the steering wheel to finance the rest of the build! Shocked Laughing

The steering wheel restored to perfect condition will bring about $500-600 assuming it's a 15 inch wheel. If it's a 14 inch wheel, tack on another $200-300 from what I hear.

The wide Sprint Stars are worth some dollars along with the Imp badge. Unless the owner is a VW guy, he doesn't know that. He just see's his old buggy through rose colored glasses and you need to give him a reality check.

If it was a clone with some generic wide steel rims, generic steering wheel and no badge, NO ONE here would offer up more than $1,000 on a good day. That said, make that your target price.

In my opinion, even with the cool EMPI stuff on it, it's not worth more than $1500. Keep in mind for thos cool parts to be worth something to you, you have to retore them and sell them. That's assuming they restore that good. Then if they sell, you have cash but no wheels, no steering wheel, no Imp badge etc. I think the whole thing is worth the most as one cool overall package. I just don't see it being worth a penny over $1500.

Here's an older thread on the "proper" front turn indicator that was used on the early Imps. It looks like its another item that needs to go on your list.

These look close

They used Delswift mirrors on the fenders

The inside mirror they used back in the day had a rubber suction cup. They were nice German quality actually made by Talbot, but they had a habit of dropping off. For day to day, I'd go with a nice windshield mirror from B&K.

I figured you didn't know they were available. That is why I was so cocky when I posted the website Wink I know there was a hefty cash outlay to get the molds rebuilt and fiberglass is nowhere as cheap to have done as it used to be.

Couldn't see the second one but without tags those might as well be clones. With the early serial number tag and unobtanium accessories on the Joplin Imp, I'd say that even if he won't go below $2K, Buy It! Fully restored(and you own a body shop)it could be a $20K buggy.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have never seen a traditional old school buggy command a $20K price tag. I reckon Bruce's Ol' Red might get that number if he isn't buried in it.
