Old Red would probably bring 10 times that.

This Meyers Manx sold at Barrett Jackson for $19,800. There was really nothing special at all about the restoration, certainly not in the same class as GeoffP's lime Green Manx.

http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlines...0&it=1

I sold a 2000 Classic Manx for $20,000 this year. It was old school style and won "Best Original Manx" at a club meet a few years ago.

Did you hear about the 1963 VW bus that sold for $217,000. I have no doubt that a flawlessly restored gold metalflake 1968 Empi Imp with all the accessories could clear $20K, probably higher.

Imp body, Imp badge, Imp seats, Imp rear wheels, Empi steering wheel... BUY THE DARN THING AND RUN!

Oh, just try to find the rear wheels on that if you need them. The front Sprint Stars come up now and again. (Not very cheap though)

I'd say it's a safe bet he'd get serious money if Old Red went on the market. I have it on good authority that monocoque Manx #4('Cuatro') changed hands for $24K a number of years ago.

Thanks for the memory refresh, David...it was 6 years ago I was told about Cuatro's price tag.

From the two links the red one is not an IMP, it is a clone.
The second link didn't work.

If it runs and stops $2000 is pretty fair.
A nice 68 with a serial number is harder to find these days.

I have a NOS serial number 1970 body I wouldn't take less than $2000 for the body alone. Those seats were optional and have a really cool black leather look texture to the top side. They were not the ones people made covers for. They were black gel-coat on the face and unfinished on the back, the opposite of most fiberglass buckets. I have an NOS set of these also.

Awesome find. I have always loved Imps. I had a full pan Empi Imp copy a few years ago. The fellas at dunebuggyarchives.com were very helpful but my old buggy is still classified as an x file in their registry. Get it and enjoy it! Here is a pic of my old buggy. I do miss it, even though it wasn't a true Imp...

So let me ask this dumb question..... If an IMP doesnt have the serial badge, does this mean it is a clone?????

My IMP has the badges, has the bump out on the hood as well as the EMPI Globe under the hood. Just no serial badge.

Here is the link to my build:

I don't know the answer to that but there is some very interesting info on here about that (question 7).

I talked to the guy in Joplin about his Imp several years ago (he had it listed here). He was about $500 higher and wouldn't budge! I can't remember for sure but I think he has a VW title for it (be sure to check the Vin number on the title matches the pan). In addition, registering a buggy under the original VW title is not legal in Missouri. Missouri has always required special construction titles for buggys (unless the title has been already modified by a different state to a roadster or other). The state law also requires photo documentation of buggys along with the title information at inspection stations to prevent the "buddy" system from working. I know people that have gotten around the law by doing a historic vehicle registration (no photo documentation), however, if caught they will impound your buggy. Good luck!

You guys have given great info and advise. The guy is supposed to find the title and call me.He has had it for many years.I do plan to get it,come what may,if for no other reason than to make my wife mad. Please let me know if you see Empi front wheels even if they seem high in price.I need to take picures of the brake handles for the emergency brake. They have black plastic covers on the ends and ,I guess, are meant to stop one side spinning if you get stuck.
Again,thank to all.This is a great community.

You need to get it on the Imp register as soon as you have it.

http://www.empiimp.com/registry/registry.html

There are almost always Sprint Stars for sale on here

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?...ton=Search

Here's some new ones

http://www.vwvintageparts.com/products/Steel-Sprint-Star-Wheel-.html

Those aren't the right type steering brake. To be correct you'll need to find a set like this.

Be sure you join www.aircooledmissouri.com. It isn't buggy specific, however, it is a great network for local VW people.

Yes, 5 1/2" x 15" 5 bolt EMPI Sprinstars would be ideal.

Yes, they also made 4.5" wide ones but 5.5" would definitely be better for an old school buggy.

5.5x15 would deffinitely be the coolest size.
