I am going with the 1.5 Tri-Mill Bobtail on my 1967cc for just that reason. Though when I rode in Vince's (surfnc) blue buggy in May I didn't find the sidewinder all that loud.

I have been running a 1 1/2" Manx Sidewinder on a bone stock 1600 DP for a couple years now. The performance is good with no noticable loss of lowend torque. The trans has a 4.27:1 R/P and I have been getting 32 mpg on the highway running 65mph.
I took the glasspak off and replaced it with a Camco Fab muffler with a set of 4" SuperTrapp discs on the end.
The stock glasspak was nice and quiet with the stock 1600 but got pretty loud with the built up 1914. I also needed a spark arrester to get into Silver Lake sand dunes in Michigan. The CamcoFab muffler with the SuperTrapp is nice and quiet. I regularly drive it on 3 to 7 hour trips with no noise issues.

It seems the 1 1/2 is the crowd favorite, at what point does the 1 5/8 become the better choice?

1 5/8" system would work best on 2 liter + motors with big carbs. Too big for anything smaller.

Ok. I'm running a 2276 with dual 44's. Should I go 1 1/2 or 1 5/8?

As David stated, 1 5/8" for engines over 2.0 liters with large dual carb's.

Murzi, Could you create '1-1/2 equals 1-3/8s' with a smaller diameter pigtail between the collector and your muffler?
